ONE OF MY FAVORITES - MANY MEMORIES HERE., May 5, 2009

I normally do not do reviews on music DVDs as I know little to nothing about the subject. I am one of those people who like what they like and listen to what they like but cannot for the life of me tell you why a certain piece of music, song, production pleases my ear. I cannot produce music nor can I sing, but I do dearly love listening and listen to quite a wide variety.
I have owned this particular DVD, Songs of Australia which is performed by The Northstar Orchestra for a number of years now and listen to it constantly. I was already quite familiar with a number of the songs presented here. I had the pleasure of serving off and on with Australian Troops over the years and having many friends among them. Other than friendship I learned two things; I loved Australian Folk music as much as the American variety, and I also learned that it is an impossible to drink one of those men and women under the table drinking beer. You simply cannot do it. Goodness knows I tried often enough. (Hey, that was years and years ago when I was quite young and made rather poor choices at times.)
Anyway, my wife bought this one for me and it is a constant companion when I am on the road. I have even gotten my teen grandsons interested in listening, a fete I am quite proud of. Of course there are favorites on this disc, songs such as Ryebuck Shearer, Click Go the Shears and South Australia are fast, catchy and easy to sing along with as you are driving. Some of the songs will be quite familiar to most, with such as Waltzing Matilda, Botany Bay and possibly Wild Colonial Boy being included on that list, but others such as Lachlan Tigers, Old Bullock Dray and Dying Stockman may be unfamiliar, but they are well worth the listen.
The DVD is quite professionally done and the music is acrostic, something I pretty well insist upon with any of my folk music. There are twelve songs in this collection and not a dog among them. The sound quality is excellent. For something a bit different, I certainly recommend this one.
