Gr 6-9-Without going into great detail, these titles provide enough pertinent information to give readers an understanding of world events during two distinct historical periods. Each book begins with background information on the subject's life and achievements, followed by individual chapters that examine the political, scientific, religious, and creative climate around the world. Sections of the chapters are marked by color-coded subheadings indicating specific continents or areas so that the readers can follow, for example, only "European" or "African" events and milestones from chapter to chapter. The volume on Einstein covers the span of his life, while Charlemagne encompasses 200 years. Full-color, captioned photographs and reproductions complement the texts. Useful resources for students needing broad overviews of these periods.-Darlene Powell, St. Stephens School, WY

A beautiful book but...(a history teacher's review),
By
This review is from: The World in the Time of Charlemagne (World in the Time of Series) (Hardcover)
This is a beautifully produced book (and part of a series) with lots of nice pictures, easy to read text and all attractively arranged.
But... I am not fond of the format. The book is organized by topic such as "Famous Rulers and Leaders", "Beliefs and Ideas" and "How People Lived". MacDonald splits the world into 7 zones and tells about how each of these topics were addressed in those 7 areas of the world during the time period (roughly). This is wonderful for looking up a quick fact but it makes for disjointed reading. It would be so much better to just tell the stories of those 7 zones in one whole continous reading, in my opinion. Aimed at 4th - 9th graders.
