Wonderful photos and interesting tidbits from the television show's creators and actors

Format: Hardcover

This is a very nice companion book for anyone who loves the television series. There are many full-page photographs from the show, along with pictures of some of the props used and an explanation for them (like the different designs of the shields). It is part history, part art, and all entertainment! Writer Michael Hirst gives a nice introduction (apparently he was interested in doing a show on vikings back in 1998, but nobody cared about vikings then). He very clearly states that this show is not a documentary, although many of the episodes are based on actual historical events. P.J. Dillon, the director of photography, talks about his favorite scenes and how he shot them, and the actors and actresses share tidbits about different episodes throughout the first three seasons. It is not too heavy on the writing and includes quite a lot of photos, but it would probably not be as meaningful to someone who hasn't seen the show. If you love the series and you have seen every episode (twice) like I have, I think you will love this book just for the insight behind the scenes.
