This review is from: World War I (America at War) (Hardcover)
A summary of the First World War and America's participation in the war. I have read a number of summaries of World War I, but Bosco managed to make this interesting by making it concise and with some little known facts. The reader can easily understand the history behind the war with an investment of two hours reading this book. Although written for high school students, this book can be read by an adult wanting to know something about this event. America's participation is highlighted, due to the educational nature of this book.
A good quick read about World War I.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historic with storytelling, March 31, 2007
This review is from: World War I (America at War) (Hardcover)
My son used this book for our WWI study in his 8th grade year. We both enjoyed reading it, and recommend other homeschoolers to consider it. Each chapter came to a close to give you a substantial amount of stories and information to discuss on. I used a thematic unit on WWI, which this book helped bring vocabulary, dates, political reasons, etc. be presented in a colorful way. I found it easy to read for 8th grade and kept my son's interest throughout it. To follow up this book for students, I suggest finding books that deal with how our society dealt with the wounded soldiers coming back. This book talks about how dreadful the war was on all sides. Let us not forget war for the soldiers does not end by an armitice.

4.0 out of 5 stars the first great war through a political and first hand account, February 20, 2008
A Kid's Review
This review is from: World War I (America at War) (Hardcover)
Within the past 2 weeks I have read World War I by Peter Bosco. This book starts off with the German boats out to sink US boats and other ships. The US was forced to side with the Allies the in war after civilian and merchant ships were attacked by the Germans. This war was to become the bloodiest in history as new kinds of warfare and horror were tested on the enemy by both sides. Tanks, machine guns, airplanes, and toxic gases were just some of the new weapons to be introduced to change warfare forever in this war. Not only does this book give you a first hand account of the soldiers in the trenches during the battle of the Somme, but also a political standpoint as the situation in the US becomes more tense, and even more deadlier. This is a great book that truly defines "The war to end all wars."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Concise History From A Very Human Perspective, July 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: World War I (America at War) (Hardcover)
This is an excellent history of World War I by a very skilled story-teller. It's a perfect book for young readers and a fascinating read for anyone interested in a concise overview of the war. Bosco also makes the human and personal side of the war experience come alive with a compassionate perspective through details often overlooked by others. I recommend it highly.
