This review is from: World War II Databook (Hardcover)
This book is not a narrative but a compilation of data covering most quantitative aspects of the war. Except for the Map section, the rest of the book, with a few minor exceptions, is in table format. The book is broken down to eight chapters plus an extensive bibliography. The chapters are:1 Maps - 25 maps. Mostly of Europe, Russia, Africa but couple of the Pacific also. 2 Command structures in detail 3 Orders of Battle divisional summary 4 Organization Tables including equipment breakdown 5 Force strengths of men and weapons including bomb tonnage 6 Casualty summary in lives and materiel lost by campaign 7 War production of raw materials and finished goods by country 8 Essential Weapon comparison between countries 9 Bibliography The data includes formal military data; it doesn't cover civilian underground organizations like Russian Partisans or the French Resistance. The chapters are well organized and the info needed is usually easy to find. This book is a great reference if you're writing a book or paper or if you're the inquisitive type. I don't use the book everyday but it comes in handy when I'm reading another book and want to confirm stated data or if pertinent info is missing, I can usually find the info in the DATABOOK. Sometimes I just browse. The maps are good and are accompanied by a chronology to explain the actions and footnotes on the map. In section two, I study the history of Soviet Front commanders. There was such a turnover; its hard to keep them straight without a source as this. Then there is Order of Battle tables and organization charts to study. There is something interesting in every section. And the coverage is not just about the five main participants. The coverage is extended in almost every case to include all the participants of the World War.
