From School Library Journal
Gr 4-6 Brief overviews of three pivotal wars in American history. The serviceably written texts are interwoven with excerpts from letters, diaries, and newspaper accounts. As history curricula increasingly require primary-source materials, these titles should be useful in that regard. Each one begins with maps of the respective areas of conflict that include timelines of major events. Tables of contents, source notes, lists of further reading, and indexes make the books suitable for research. Pertinent black-and-white photographs appear throughout. Although the treatments are extremely superficial, these titles may be just right for students wanting general historical outlines. More visually compelling alternatives include Norman Bolotin and Angela Herb's For Home and Country (Lodestar, 1995) and Kathleen Krull's V Is for Victory (Knopf, 1995).
