Book Description

Perspectives on History January 1, 1970
When World War II broke out, Roosevelt led the nation through a dramatic changeover to a wartime economy. Women found a new place in the workforce; Americans at home pulled together to economize through rationing of food, tires, gasoline, silk, and more; families grew their own produce in their victory gardens; and school children saved their pennies to invest in war bonds. This volume of life on the U. S. homefront tells the stories of the people, in their own words, who lived through those times: black Americans who faced increased prejudice, women who embarked on new careers, and Japanese-Americans in internment camps.

5.0 out of 5 stars World War II: On the Homefront, April 5, 2000

This review is from: World War II: On the Homefront (Perspectives on History) (Paperback)
This is a very short read; 60 plus pages that can be read literally in 20 minutes. It includes speeches, statistical information and personal recollections on some of the salient aspects of homefront life. Each section covers a specific aspect, which is preceded by an overview delivered by the editor, Ms. Emert. The book provides a great deal of information desite being only 63 pages; from the changing face of the American Worker during the wartime economy to the injustice and racism that marred that time period. The one thing that was missing, however, was the patriotic mood that ostensibly existed amongst the people of that period. This patriotic mood has always been a common thread in everything I have read on this subject or when speaking to people of that generation. This perhaps was done intentionally to keep the reader's objectivity. Overall a good read, especially when considering the ratio of information gleaned to the time spent.
