Editorial Reviews

Jazz fans might pass over this excellent CD by John Bunch because of the ridiculous statement beneath the label logo identifying it as "easy listening, lite jazz"; this is hardly something that should be confused with the bland offerings of various smooth jazz artists. Bunch's tribute to World War II songs is very appropriate, since he served aboard a bomber during the conflict, and was shot down and captured. Joined by two seasoned musicians, bassist Michael Moore and drummer Butch Miles, Bunch swings through 17 favorites from the era, including "Chattanooga Choo Choo," the upbeat "Somebody Else Has Taken My Place," which sounds as if it is based on the chord changes to "(Back Home Again In) Indiana," and one of the most meaningful ballads for members of the armed forces being separated from their spouses, "I'll Be Seeing You." More than a nostalgia trip, Bunch brings life to each of these melodies with his thoughtful arrangements. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide --This text refers to an alternate Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scintillating, January 17, 2008
This review is from: World War II Love Songs (Audio CD)
John Bunch is one of the best middle-of-the-road Jazz pianists around. The tunes on this album are all memorable and carry with them a whiff of nostalgia for the home front in wartime. Bunch's trio negotiates them securely, with a slight bounce and the merest suggestion of Swing. Bunch is always a fluent pianist, and the notes in his improvisations never seem too few or too many. The sound engineering is lovely, complimenting what is a very handsome disc.
