Product Description

From the Manufacturer

A pandemic is sweeping across the globe and is threatening humanity's survival. Playing as Elite Military or CIA personnel, you must race against time and around the world with one mission: Survive and Prevent the Zombie Apocalypse. Begin the action on "Stage 1" of the Zombie Pandemic with equal rations of water, weapons, ammunition and military gear. Defend, contain, escape and fight zombies but proceed with caution and planning as each stage takes you to a new global location that is even more hazardous and dangerous than the last. Watch out and don't get infected with the Zombie Virus or you'll be forced to continue the game as a Zombie. Time is ticking - which side will win?.

Product Description

In this strategy game based on the action blockbuster starring Brad Pitt, outlast the zombie pandemic by assuming any of six military or Special Forces roles. Players begin in North America and spread out across the world to battle Zombie’s or “Z’s” using a combination of weapons, tactics, and unique abilities. Work together, and choose wisely how boldly to strike at the zombie hordes. Being too timid may result in the entire world becoming overrun, but act too aggressively and you could be overwhelmed by zombies and turned against your allies by becoming a Z yourself. Zombie hordes appear in four different strength levels—defeat them with the right combination of strategy and luck, using the six, eight, ten, and twelve-sided dice included. The starting layout is random so that no game is the same twice! Will you succeed in clearing the world of Zs, or will you become one of the infected? Challenging and action-packed, this game is a must-have for both strategy gamers and fans of the movie.

This game IS Pandemic, but twisted a little bit for the sake of being different.

This is also a cooperative game, so all of the players are united and playing towards the same goal of eliminating enough zombie hordes that the human race survives.
J. M. Lavender
Good element of randomness, so the playthroughs have been pretty different actually - we lost a couple, but won more often, at least when playing cooperative.

World War Z Board Game from University Games will let you play as elite military or CIA personnel, racing against time to prevent a pandemic zombie apocalypse. It’s no secret that I liked the movie and I’ve been known to write a zombie story or two myself, so the genre is interesting to me and like I said, I thought the movie was pretty good, though it was nothing like the (much better) novel.

I bought World War Z – The Game and after reading the rules, played it with my son, Spencer. Just to be clear, this is an old-school board game with dice and people sitting around the table, conversing and interacting, analog style. This is also a cooperative game, so all of the players are united and playing towards the same goal of eliminating enough zombie hordes that the human race survives. If a player dies, he becomes a zombie and then plays in opposition to the remaining human players, which is an interesting take on the traitor element that is used effectively in Shadows Over Camelot and Battlestar Galactica.

The game board is a map of the world divided into zones, not unlike what you see with the game Risk, but the resemblance to that classic ends there. There are also cards, polyhedral battle dice and cardboard counters. There are rules, which outline the actions a player can take each turn. It doesn’t really matter what actions you take though, because everything will come down to a dice roll.

Each player is given randomly dealt a Role Card, and these roles are not balanced. During your turn, you can move to a new part of the world. You can equip a combat card, showing a weapon. You can battle a zombie horde in an occupied zone, and you must escalate the threat by drawing a threat escalation card to determine how the zombie threat grows.

Max Brooks + Strategy = Win. Heavy on the utilization of resources and random events keep the game fresh for multiple rounds. I played the first round against friends as a Zombie and loved it. You have the option of which side you are on and depending on what you choose will determine your game play. The escalation deck and weapon deck keep the game interesting and the different dice keep the random nature alive. Feels similar to Pandemic. Definitely worth the buy. I would recommend the manufacturer look into further expansion decks to up the ante.

If you are thinking the board game will have some movie elements in it, it doesn't. Instead, it is wack a zombie hoard mole on a Risk map (with some grey splotches added in for "limited intelligence"). The cards aren't coated so they will wear quick, many of the cards are duplicates of the same picture (I am going to take on a zombie hoard with an axe! why?), and the board is just a step above stiff paper. The dice are good quality however and the rules are short so you can get playing pretty quickly. Too bad, I was hoping for some interesting challenges like they face in the movie (look for those crumbs!) but instead it is a pure combat/resource game with D+ components. My guess is that they had an interesting game element (like the movie plot) tied to the grey areas and had to chuck it to get the game out. I should have known better when they didn't include a picture of the game components on the back of the box like most games do.

Got this on sale for $7 and I paid too much. This game IS Pandemic, but twisted a little bit for the sake of being different. But the differences make the game WORSE not better.
For one, the player cards that can be played are mainly weak, useless or unoriginal. There is no creativity here, just a copy/paste from other games.
Second and worse problem is quality. The tokens feel like they could have been bought in a Dollar Tree kids toy, and the player cards are ACTUALLY printed on standard house hold printer paper. And the packaging is equally poor.

If you want a good zombie game similar to Pandemic, just label one of the diseases 'zombification' and you will have a much better time.

Best zombie-theme game I've played so far. Good element of randomness, so the playthroughs have been pretty different actually - we lost a couple, but won more often, at least when playing cooperative. The propagation cards that increase the zombie hordes can be tough on some rounds. Then we got obsessed with trying to win as a zombie - kinda like shooting the moon in Hearts, not easy to do but great when you can swing it. Hilarious times trying to bash each other after so many co-op games recently. So it basically has a 2nd way to play at a higher level, where the strategy is more complex and stakes are higher. Rounds are still pretty quick though, 30 mins or so. Which I guess captures the intensity of the best zombie movies - the type that I like - like 28 Days, etc. which I have high hopes of the movie living up to. Anyway great gameplay, not repetitive, pretty pleased with it so far. Prolly not educational though lol
