A well crafted novelization of Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness,
This review is from: World of Warcraft: Tides of Darkness (Worlds of Warcraft) (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm new to Rosenberg, but definitely not to the Warcraft world and it's lore. Rosenberg takes the story of the game, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness and does a solid job of putting it into a gripping novel that serves as a solid refresher on events that happened years before the setting of World of Warcraft. It also gives you a glimpse into some of the characters that you'll find in the World of Warcraft and give you an idea why there are statues of some of them outside of Stormwind.
For timeline purposes, this book takes place right after the first war between the humans and orcs. It's best to be read after Christie Golden's Rise of the Horde which ends as the horde are starting their initial invasion into Azeroth, and also after Jeff Grubb's The Last Guardian which shows what happens on the human side during the first war. This will give introduce you to a few of the major characters on both sides of the war in Tides of Darkness. If you're a fan of the Warcraft universe, you should enjoy this novelization of one of the major chapters in the World's history. If not, then chances are this book isn't going to be for you.

I picked up this book with great hopes. For those who are a fan of the online game, or the rpg game, or the card game (yes there are so many!), you should realize that there is a funny, adult sense of humor that pervades everything.
With this novel, I was left with the impression that it was written for 5th-6th graders. There were many opportunities to flesh out the characters that went unrealized, but more importantly, it seemed that the author had a list of things he needed to include in the book and he checked them off one by one. It felt that the author was relating the "lore" of warcraft not by creating it, but by instead paraphrasing other material. I realize that yea, someone else is in charge of the property, and all that, but this book does not stand on its own and you can really see where it falls apart. I think the people writing the warcraft novels need to keep in mind their target demographic is not < 13 years of age. If it is, please put this and the next ones in the early reader section so at least your adult fans of warcraft will know what they are getting.

I had a little trouble getting into it at first but the book takes shape about halfway in and proves to be an enjoyable read.
As others have mentioned it is not written on an adult level which is fine since it is intended for fanboys of World of Warcraft. It can get a little frustrating if you are expecting deeper characterizations and more engaging plots but if you are looking for background lore in playing World of Warcraft (which is what I was doing) it fills the bill.

Truly Amazing!,

I have read War of The Ancients Trilogy, Rise of the Horde and the Last Guardian before attempting Tides of Darkness. So far, this book has proven to be the most enjoyable to read. It is very well written, loaded with action and Aaron makes you feel like you are there with heroes of the Horde and the Alliance. Unfortunately, this is not the case for World of Warcraft novels by Richard A. Knaak and Christie Golden.
Bottom line: A truly great read! I could not put it down even though I had to study for my Calculus 3 Test.

Novelized Version of WarCraft II:Tides of Darkness,
By Tiger (Pittsburgh, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: World of Warcraft: Tides of Darkness (Worlds of Warcraft) (Mass Market Paperback)
The title of my review says it all, this book is basically a novelized version of the computer game "WarCraft II: Tides of Darkness". However, it is so well put together and includes the appearances of so many prominant figures of the World of WarCraft series (and key artifacts) that any fan would love to get ahold of a copy of this book and read it. If you are a fan of WoW, WarCraft, or fantasy novels in general - I highly recommend this read.

World of Warcraft: Tides of Darkness, by Aaron Rosenberg
I read this immediately after finishing "Rise of the Horde," by Christie Golden, and as such it provides a continuation of what happens after the orcs entered the Dark Portal. It is the story of the Second War, when the orcs tried to take over Azeroth but were stopped by the Alliance of humans, dwarves, and elves. "Tides of Darkness" is a novelization of Warcraft II, and so is good background information for players new to the Warcraft universe. I don't have much to say about this book. It's a quick read, despite its length of 374 pages; it felt to me like Rosenberg was writing to a juvenile audience. While he has some key figures of the Warcraft universe starring in the book, such as Turalyon, Khadgar, Lothar, Doomhammer, Gul'dan, and Zul'jin, the novel as a whole feels pretty flat and uninspired. Part of that could be because it is a direct tie-in novel to a video game and the author likely didn't have much leeway, but I still wish the book just had that special something to it. Je ne sais quoi. 2/5.

A good book with a lot of cool information about the world. Not my favorite in the series of books, but still well worth the read. For anybody with any interest in understanding a lot of the lore behind the World of Warcraft game, the book is fulled with a lot of information that should peak your interest. For other people, still a solid story with a classic ending.

I loved it,
This review is from: World of Warcraft: Tides of Darkness (Worlds of Warcraft) (Mass Market Paperback)
This is a great book, it's great to be able to read about the heroes and rulers, and then go online and play in the world you were reading about, along with all the other Warcraft Novels, I strongly suggest getting this one.

Not the best WOW book,
This review is from: World of Warcraft: Tides of Darkness (Worlds of Warcraft) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was alright. It's worth reading just to fill in the story line. I have not found it as enjoyable as some of the other WOW stories, such as Rise of the Horde. I felt the character development was a bit flat (although to be fair, I think it is expected that you already know many of the characters like Gul'Dan, Oggrim, and Khadgar), and that the plot was a bit simple. I didn't get quite the "hero-worship" (so to speak) that I would have expected reading about the start of the paladin order (my main character in game is a paladin tank), which makes me think it could have been more developed - after all, the development of a new class is a significant event, and I feel it could have been more developed. I would still encourage people interested in lore to read it, just for completeness sake, but I doubt I will be rereading it anytime soon.
