Editorial Reviews

Rosanne Cash

"Caroline Horn's songs are original, deeply melodic, lyrically fresh, and as well-built as a Frank Lloyd Wright house."

Product Description

A 12-song disc of catchy melodies, smart lyrics and gorgeous alto vocals, Caroline Horn's The World We Knew is infused with folk, pop, rock and roots music. Imagine a radio set list with numbers by Mark Knopfler, James Taylor, Jane Siberry, and Shawn Colvin. These tunes would be right at home nestled in between.

Horn delivers a passionate collection of originals. The album opens with the lyrical "Can’t Keep Your Memory Down," the sweetly longing love song "Crooked Smile," and the gripping "Revolution," which she calls her Thelma and Louise anthem.

Listeners may recognize the final cut, the dreamy and hopeful "Surfacing," which was heard on the HBO hit series Sex in the City.

Other highlights include the mysterious "Guardians," the lap-steel twanged "28 Bittersweet Lane," the sadly beautiful "Canyon," and the guitar and violin colors of the gently-grooving "Pink Lemonade."

The World We Knew was over three years in the making. Horn worked with two different producers on this project— Kerryn Tolhurst (guitarist for The Dingoes, Bruce Henderson) and Mark Epstein (bassist for Johnny Winter). The CD features performances by a group of renowned players, including:

*Shawn Pelton (drummer for Saturday Night Live band, Shawn Colvin, Celine Dion)

*Jeff Pevar (guitarist for Marc Cohn, David Crosby, Rickie Lee Jones)

*Valerie Vigoda (violinist for Cyndi Lauper, Joe Jackson, Groovelily)

*Bashiri Johnson (percussionist for Miles Davis, Whitney Houston).

The tracks were recorded in NY and Savannah, Georgia; mixed in New York and Adelaide, Australia; and mastered in Melbourne, Australia. Indeed, the credits tell a story about how this album found its way around the globe and back again.

The time and the miles were both worth taking. The World We Knew is 50 minutes of pop beauty, edgy yearning and insightful reflection. -Dan Ouellette

5.0 out of 5 stars Innovative and Melodic, April 29, 2003

This review is from: The World We Knew (Audio CD)
I first heard Caroline Horn's voice in Susan Graham White's song "Seasons." I was driving in the desert of Southeastern Utah, listening to the song on public radio, as the sun burst through a cloud to create a magnificent sunset over the San Rafael Swell, filling the sky with a multitude of colors as only a desert sunset can. Susan's and Caroline's intertwining voices, mingling with the intensely colored sky above the cliffs, created one of those rare moments when everything seemed to be perfectly at peace. I purchased Caroline's "The World We Knew" because her harmony vocals on Susan's CD "Sounding Land" were so mesmerizing. After listening to "The World We Knew," I'm convinced that Caroline Horn's artistry as a singer/songwriter is a treasure waiting to be discovered. The lyrics are poetic, the music innovative and melodic, mostly soothing but at times intense, and her voice is unmatched.
