Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1 Samton's first book is a lovely, imaginative journey for young children. Counting the various forms of nature seen through a window at dusk, the lilting poetry has a calming effect, reminiscent of both Goodnight, Moon (Harper, 1947) by Margaret W. Brown and Ezra Jack Keats' version of Over in the Meadow (Scholastic, 1985). However, the brightness of the vivid cut-out collage-style illustrations belies the fact that twilight is approaching. Under these brilliant banner-like pictures are both words and numbers of the objects ("Seven cranes, 7"), which helps reinforce the concept and also creates a flowing sing-song rhythm. Some children may have difficulty with the abstract nature of these illustrationsitems to be counted are sometimes only half on the page or overlapping, but this very abstractness differentiates the book from the many other counting books available. The final two-page panorama ties everything together in a splash of color and movement. With a combination of simplicity of phrasing and striking visuals, this book is sure to become a favorite for story time and bedtime. Janet E. Fricker, formerly at Roscoe L. West Library, Trenton State College, Hillwood Lakes, N.J.
