Book Description

March 1, 2005
Who exactly was King Arthur? What is the evidence for him as a historical figure, and how does this figure relate to the hero of medieval romances and other legends? Fran and Geoff Doel trace the cultural development of the legendary and literary Arthur, through medieval Welsh sources, the French Romances, and the tradition of courtly love to Thomas Malory’s Le Morte D’Arthur and the Tudor myth.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Who exactly was King Arthur? What is the evidence for him as a historical figure and how does this figure relate to the hero of medieval romances and other legends? What is the origin of the Knights of the Round Table or the Quest for the Holy Grail? How did Arthur become linked with Tintagel, Glastonbury and other sites?

Terry Lloyd first searches for the historical Arthur, whilst Fran and Geoff Doel trace the cultural development of the legendary and literary Arthur, through medieval Welsh sources, the French Romances and the tradition of courtly love to Thomas Malory’s Le Morte D’Arthur and the Tudor myth. They conclude with the contribution of Tennyson and the pre- Raphaelites in the nineteenth century and the explosion of Arthurian novels and films in recent years.

About the Author

Folklorists Fran and Geoff Doel are the authors of 'The Green Man in Britain', 'Robin Hood' and 'The Folklore of Kent'. Terry Lloyd is a part-time Lecturer in further education.
