3.0 out of 5 stars A pretty, but incomplete and at times inaccurate book., December 31, 2008
By
This review is from: The World's Best Nude Beaches and Resorts (Paperback)
My first complaint is that all the pretty photos are not representative of the usual crowd at nudist resorts or beaches. Come on, TNS, get real. I know, TNS is a commercial enterprise--not a non profit association of nudists--so publication of a book full of pretty nudes makes sense if you're in the book selling business. But it certainly doesn't represent the reality of nude recreation.

My second complaint is that while overlooking some very attractive and convenient locations for nude recreation the book details the location of some marginal beaches. I know that it would be impossible to list every place, but it would seem reasonable to use the page budget to describe places that people can get to easily. As an example, in Germany the great public nude beach at the Langenerwaldsee which is about a 10 minute cab ride from Frankfurt Airport is not listed, while some pretty remote and frankly nasty beaches on the Baltic are described at length. How many more people might like to catch a quick nude lake swim between flights at FRA than will trek to the cold rocky beaches of the northern German coast?

Then, there is the flat out hazardous recommendation of some locations that are not really nude-friendly. For example, if you decide to strip off on Okracoke Island, NC, be prepared for a ticket from Mr. Ranger.

It is also worth noting that the editorial integrity of the publication with respect to resorts is questionable. The column inches devoted to a resort is obviously influenced by the size of the ad purchased by the resort.

So, overall, it's a pretty book with some useful information, but should under no circumstances be considered a worthy successor to Lee Baxandall's work. It is not the authoritative guide that it purports to be, and its guidance with respect to any of the beaches should be checked locally before you strip off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful guide, November 6, 2007
This review is from: The World's Best Nude Beaches and Resorts (Paperback)
This is the most up to date guide that I know of, the closest you can come to traveling with the actual internet in your hands. Grate photos, good descriptions and up to date web sites for more information. Every naturist should have a copy not only for planning your next vacation but also to learn what places are out there. This may not be a complete guide, there never could be, but it is a wonderful reference tool.

4.0 out of 5 stars Should be on every nudist's bookshelf, April 9, 2009
This review is from: The World's Best Nude Beaches and Resorts (Paperback)
The Naturist Society's long-awaited sequel to the New York Times bestseller 'The World Guide to Nude Beaches and Resorts' is a satisfyingly substantial book which takes you on a whirlwind tour of the world's best nudist spots.

Reviewing 1000 "beautiful places to get naked" in more than 50 countries ( I'll take their word for it. I didn't count), it feels more like a TV documentary than a book and certainly covers an immense amount of ground. Such an ambitious project could easily have been a disaster, but it has to be said that on the whole the production team have pulled it off pretty well.

Given the scope of the book and the limitations of the medium it is inevitable that some of the entries are almost brutally concise, but even so all the salient points are clearly set out, including a brief description and "Practical info", which gives directions, additional information and contact details where appropriate. The authors have even allowed for the probability that some of the information will become out of date over time, promising to publish updates on their website as and when they become necessary.

This is a very handsome book, beautifully designed and with nearly every one of over 300 glossy pages enlivened by superb photos from the likes of Charlie Simonds and others. Ironically, it's these very photos that provoke my only criticism of this otherwise splendid book.

We nudists are constantly banging on to anyone who is listening that you don't need a flawless body to become a nudist, and that naturism can be enjoyed by everyone, whatever shape or size. And yet nearly all the photos in this book feature beautiful young people who look like they've just walked off a Playboy photo-shoot. Aren't we in danger of, at best being hypocritical, and at worst, alienating potential newcomers who may have body-image doubts? Surely a liberal sprinkling of wrinklies and wobblies amongst the firm young bodies would be more truthful and accurate, and might encourage more first-timers? But then I suppose beautiful people sell more books.

Ah well. Perhaps I'm being a little curmudgeonly. It must be my age. Because that one caveat aside, this really is a very fine book indeed, and should be on every nudist's bookshelf. The authors and production team deserve our thanks. The World's Best Nude Beaches and Resorts
