Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-7?If they prove anything, these 20 accounts of UFO sightings and human encounters with presumably alien life demonstrate that anyone, anywhere can have such an experience. In the preface, the authors urge open-mindedness on the parts of believers and skeptics alike. One-third of the well-detailed stories are the de rigueur standards found in similar collections such as Anne Canadeo's UFOs (Walker, 1990) and Melvin Berger's UFOs, ETs & Visitors from Space (Putnam, 1988). The remainder range from puzzling (a bright light seen by Jimmy Carter, then governor of Georgia) to terrifying (the abduction of a woman from her Manhattan apartment). The presentation of these reports leaves the final decision about whether or not to believe them to readers. Most books on this subject include photographs taken by witnesses, as in Ted Wilding-White's lavishly illustrated All About UFOs (EMC, 1978; o.p.), while each of these stories is accompanied by a dark, pointillist-style black-and-white drawing. One of this title's most notable features is a finely detailed name, place, and subject index. No bibliography is included, while Daniel Cohen's UFOS Third Wave (Evans, 1988) has a fairly extensive one.?Ann G. Brouse, Steele Memorial Library, Elmira, NY

Review

Have extraterrestrials invaded? The authors, professional UFOlogists, present supportive examples of real invasions, from a US president's report to military involvements in chasing down UFOs. Directed at a young adult audience, many an adult won't be able to resist. -- Midwest Book Review
