Biography

There aren't many rock bands on this planet that wouldn't like to be regarded as unique. Of course, in these times of nostalgia and endlessly recycled ideas, very few actually deserve that description. Finland's Apocalyptica deserve it more than most. Utterly original in every respect, these classically-trained merchants of genre-shattering metal, sound quite unlike anything or anyone else in… Read more in Amazon's Apocalyptica Store

Deluxe Edition Double CD set. Apocalyptica is a Finnish cello metal band, composed of classically trained cellists and, since 2005, a drummer. Three of the cellists are graduates of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland. Their music features elements from cello metal, neo-classical metal, progressive metal and symphonic metal. It includes special guests Till Lindemann, Corey Taylor, Adam Gontier, Dave Lombardo, Tomoyasu Hotei, and Cristina Scabbia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Metal Transcending Metal, May 14, 2008
By
Montague Whitsel (Western Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Worlds Collide (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
I have long been a fan of both heavy metal and classical music. I grew up listening to Black Sabbath, and later got into Dio and Metallica. My favorite classical music has to be anything with cellos in it. When I came across a video on YouTube earlier this year of four guys playing cellos covering a Metallica tune (Enter Sandman), I could hardly believe my ears (and eyes). Having checked out the CD that that track came from, Plays Metallica by Four Cellos and being blown away by it, I couldn't resist getting their new CD when it came out in April. I wasn't disappointed. APOCALYPTICA takes my experience of metal to a whole new level. Their chording and the way they phrase lines and modulate from key to key -- even the intervals they use -- makes this album a rich aesthetic experience. Driving, wailing, screeching, and bowing hard or soft and haunting as each composition demands, the music on "Worlds Collide" pushes the genre to new heights. The vocals add a nuance to the music not found on their earliest CD. The addition of the drums and other typical rock instruments only enhances the strangeness of the experience; this is a powerful world--one that you should really try out!

This review is from: Worlds Collide (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
Apocalyptica continue to impress me with their creativity. A definite plus is the variety of every song. This album is a very good one and a must for Apocalyptica fans, nothing out there like it!
