Book Description

March 1, 2005
A strikingly illustrated guide to twenty of the world’s most exciting long- distance hikes.

The twenty hikes featured in this lavishly illustrated guide cover every inhabited continent and range from a daring passage along the glaciers of the Karakorum to an age-old pilgrimage route through northern Spain, but they do have one thing in common: adventure. All the treks are of at least five days’ duration and present formidable challenges, like the hazards of extreme terrain or the need for self-sufficiency in landscapes traversed only by hardy locals. Hikers who successfully meet these challenges are rewarded with the sights and experiences of a lifetime: a breathtaking vista of the ruins of Machu Picchu, a delicious meal in a remote Greek mountain village, or even an encounter with New Zealand’s kea, the world’s only species of alpine parrot.

Compiled by passionate trekkers who know their respective regions intimately, these accounts reveal the best routes and side trips along the world’s most exciting trails, from the lofty, rugged spine of America’s Continental Divide to the snowy craters of Mount Kilimanjaro. Supplementary descriptions with detailed maps, equipment recommendations, and contact addresses will give enterprising hikers all the information they need to plan their own expeditions, while more than 200 full-color photographs of lush valleys, windswept plains, and jagged peaks will thrill armchair travelers. Whether you intend to undertake an adventure trek yourself or just relish one vicariously, this book will extend the limits of your experience with nature and bring you closer to the great outdoors.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Whether hiking up snow-covered mountains or traversing the coasts of tropical islands, trekkers approach the world with an unparalleled sense of adventure. The thrill of exploring the Earth's most beautiful and isolated landscapes is captured in this informative and exquisitely illustrated volume, a guide to the 20 best hiking locations in the world. Combining detailed descriptions with breathtaking photographs, the book allows readers to experience each trek from the comfort of their living rooms, and offers many helpful tips for those who are then inspired to embark on adventures of their own. Various hiking enthusiasts contribute to the volume, some writing in the straightforward style of a tour guide and others choosing to take a more personal, anecdotal approach, but each account is accompanied by a table of information that includes the length, trekking style and possible dangers of each route. The diversity of the trails, covering six continents and ranging in difficulty level from "generally easy" to "expertise on prolonged glacier travel is essential," ensures that readers will be able to find a trek that suits their skills and desires. Whether planning an upcoming journey or simply experiencing the life of a trekker through the awe-inspiring photographs, those who pick up this volume will be overwhelmed by the beauty of these routes, many of which can only be explored on foot.

Used this book to pick a backpacking trip this summer. Pictures are gorgeous, trail descriptions are accurate and the hike segments are surprisingly realistic. Ended up hiking the Sawtooth Traverse as described and used the section throughout the hike.

Thoroughly enjoyed the other segments and hope to go on several other trips as described over the next few years.
