Editorial Reviews

Stunning 100 CD set containing a plethora of classic Bebop Jazz. Bebop marked the beginning of Modern Jazz, a musical and technical revolution and the first example of Jazz as an art. New harmonic structures coupled with improvising at a fast tempo together with hip outfits. Doc.

Bebop is my all-time favorite music-- so adventurous, groundbreaking and fun. A challenge for every musician who ever has played it, and I've been playing it for many years-- it still opens doors over 60 years later and STILL SOUNDS MODERN. The harmony opened up and is still the underpinning of our musical expression today. Now, with this massive release, you get so many of the classic recordings in one 100-CD set. The sound is great, the documentation well done. I don't know how they paid all the royalties for such a massive undertaking, but this is not a bootleg collection, which is why I bought it (as a musician, I don't fundamentally support bootlegging). Yes, I have many of these recordings already, but they are not gathered in a single well-done retrospective which really gives you the "feel" of the period, and illustrates the evolution of the music. Also, there are many recordings that are available on CD for the first time-- some of this stuff was only on vinyl before this point. I'm thinking about getting one of those 200 CD carousel players to load this set in and keep it there permanently and just play it constantly for a number of months. It has re-affirmed the mightiness of Bebop, how momentous a shift it created in music, and what a pleasure it is to listen to. You'll wind up smiling with some of the gems they've unearthed here. You get some obscure diamonds like the Eckstine band in full flight, Sassy and Ella when they were very young and still developing how to sing this new "bop" stuff, Tadd Dameron's genius... I could go on but JUST BUY IT. For under a buck a CD, it's a great investment and will provide a lifetime of listening pleasure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the Cleanest of the Membran Jazz Sets March 28, 2014

I have purchased a number of these Membran set. This is the worse one I've encountered when it comes to surface noise. There is little comparison between this set and the Bigband Swing set. That set was virtually free of surface noise. Not so for this one. A substantial number of tracks in this set contain surface noise, ranging from slight to light but very noticeable to quite noisy. The early Charlie Parker tracks from 1944 are especially noisy. In a couple of cases, it appears that Membran did no noise reduction, leaving a very noisy lead in. Surely, if one were doing noise reduction, one would substitute silence for the lead in up to the start of the music.

In the vast majority of cases where surface noise is apparent in the recordings, it is sufficiently light that one can easily ignore it. Of course, there are a very substantial number of tracks that are perfectly clear. I think it is a toss up as to whether the majority of tracks are very clean or if the majority has at least slight surface noise.

Many of these tracks came from recordings made in various clubs, Armed Services Radio broadcasts and other radio transcriptions. The vast majority are clearly from records, some of which were well worn.

The equalization of these tracks is quite good. There are no tracks where it is clear that equalization was applied; equalization should never be obvious without having to compare before and after recordings. In fact, there are a very few tracks which were recorded using a very poor microphone. Not only does the music sound tinny, the voice of the announcer is quite noticeably not full spectrum. If equalization was attempted on those tracks, it isn't obvious.

Having said all that, this is still a worthwhile set.

5.0 out of 5 stars A BEST BUY February 24, 2013

If you have any interest in the history of either Jazz or BeBop, this is a great addition to your Jazz library. 100 discs for a good price (just under $108.00 US). Yes, it covers stuff you most likely have already -- but there's so much more.

Great compilation especially for the price. Just got the Bebop, Big Band, and Classic members of the set and I am loving this collection. I've had my eye on this for a while and 3 of the 5 sets that make it up are under 100 dollars on Amazon today (11.23,13) which is a steal. The swing and modern sets are over 300 and 200 now; one of them, I forget which, was at 150 the other day. I guess I was too stingy for my own good when I passed on it at that price! It's worth more than I am willing/able to pay for it.
