A Nutrition/Cookbook Double Whammy,
By K. Walters "Lover of fitness, politics, readi... (Washington, DC USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The World's Healthiest Foods, Essential Guide for the Healthiest Way of Eating (Paperback)
This is a truly incredible book. It is filled with TONS of nutrition information about the healthiest foods and the healthiest methods for cooking each of them. It also includes a quick-and-easy recipe for each specific food (e.g., tomatoes, cabbage, bananas), as well as a number of variations on that recipe. The recipes I have tried have all been incredibly tasty, figure-friendly, and easy to prepare. This book is large and packed with more information than you will ever be able to absorb. If you could only purchase one cookbook, this is the one I would recommend (and I own hundreds!). 5 stars.

Cooking Adventures,
This review is from: The World's Healthiest Foods, Essential Guide for the Healthiest Way of Eating (Paperback)
George Mateljan presents the world's healthiest foods and includes over 500 delicious recipes to ensure that our diets include foods that have the "greatest number of health-promoting nutrients." He gives detailed information on 100 foods that are not only flavorful; they are the foods you need to enjoy a vibrantly healthy lifestyle.
What you will notice when using the recipes or including the foods recommended for your diet, is an increase in positive energy, creativity and a feeling of being happy to be alive. After only three or four days you can start to experience renewed vitality and visible changes in energy levels and overall health. Some of the highlights include: What are the Word's 100 Healthiest Foods? The Healthiest Way of Eating Plan - complete week-to-week plan with page numbers for the recipes to make each day. Through this book you learn to cook with herbs and spices, incorporate whole grains into breads and eat a healthy balance of protein and carbohydrates. The foods are organized according to nutrient-rich qualities. A shopping list at the end of the book makes this user-friendly and encourages you to remember to buy the healthiest foods each and every time you go shopping. If you have an interest in Sea vegetables (like toasted Nori you can also use for sushi) for their anti-inflammatory properties, they are easy to buy in sheets and I found you can add some to even the simplest of chicken soups to create a more healthy meal. A recipe for Hijiki Cucumber Salad makes use of Hijiki and you can add in tamari and ginger. Many of the recipes include intriguing variations. Imagine dipping fresh breads into a garlic dip made with fresh garlic, lemon juice and garbanzo beans. Do you only have five minutes to create a healthy snack? Try the Cranberry and Fresh Pear Cobbler. I loved the idea of adding yogurt and topping the tasty treat with granola. This idea has endless variations throughout the seasons and you can substitute any number of fresh fruits in season. This no bake recipe is delicious any time of the year. Other recipes you may enjoy: Tuna Salad without Mayo (he uses lemon juice, tofu, herbs and olive oil) Healthy Sautéed Scallops (garlic, lemon juice, olive oil) Steamed Mashed Potatoes Tropical Banana Treats Grapefruit Sunrise (You can also use frozen watermelon and orange juice for a similar experience) Papaya with Lime In the winter this book becomes very useful when you make your own chicken soups or stocks. You can then add the healthiest vegetables and even sliced organic greens to make delicious winter soups you can freeze and reheat at a moment's notice. Interested in how to use Turmeric? Advice is given on how to add the powder at the end of cooking for the best results. This is an anti-inflammatory agent used by the Chinese and in India. Dr. Weil talks about a tea that is made by people who live long healthy lives. You can also find it in tablet form, but it is more delicious when you cook. "Turmeric's powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacities help explain why many people with joint disease find relief when they use this spice regularly." ~pg. 701 The section on herbs and spices gives you ideas for what to include in your spice cupboard (dried) or refrigerator (fresh). Black pepper, ginger, dill, cilantro, rosemary and cinnamon are included. The section on dietary fiber had a few surprises, like raspberries are listed right along with carrots and eggplant so you can expand your ideas on what counts as fiber, vs. what you thought was fun for dessert. A special section for fighting disease gives ideas on how to feel better fast. If you want to improve your hair and nail health, you can start to eat more "biotin-containing" foods and increase foods with Omega-3 fatty acids that can also help with migraines and depression. So truly as you increase health in one area, you increase overall health. This book is definitely about lifestyle and incorporating healthy choices into everyday living. As I'm writing this, I just finished cooking a spaghetti squash and have chicken with herbs roasting in the oven. The aromas of home cooking are inspirational and the healthy way you feel when you cook with the foods recommended in this book is priceless. In what seems like no time at all, you can bake squash, cook up a chicken dish for dinner and even make homemade bread with rye and oats. Having a bread maker, a blender, a good set of sharp knives and a few essentials like a steamer basket and a set of pots and pans (especially a stock pot for soups) will take you a long way while using this book. You don't even have to make your own stocks because stock paste is readily available in most grocery stores. Cooking can be as fun as creating art or making music. You are fully participating in the dance of life and feeling healthy and alive is the bonus of the "healthiest foods" lifestyle. Now when you go to the grocery store you can buy items you never tried before, because you have all the recipes you need and many of the recipes don't even require "cooking." Most of the ingredients are very familiar and the extensive index helps you to locate ingredients fast. So if you have strawberries from your last shopping trip, you can quickly turn to page 647 and make a fruit smoothie. This truly is one of the most exciting "cookbooks" you will ever buy because it not only incorporates delicious foods into your diet, you become healthier with each recipe you try and you understand why you feel better. Honestly, this book will change your life! ~The Rebecca Review

A "must have" for everyone,

This review is from: The World's Healthiest Foods, Essential Guide for the Healthiest Way of Eating (Paperback)
I came across the web site for this book during my quest to find a diet for people with fibromyalgia (which I have). I found the web site to be the most imformative and best of it's kind. Thus, I assumed the book would be the same. IT WAS AND IS WONDERFUL. This is not a book you read from cover-to-cover. It's one that you pick up, open, and read - one item at a time - to expand your knowledge a specific item. For each item you find all the nutritional information you could ever want, plus a recipe (or two or three) using that item. This book is so GOOD that I recommended it to my reflexologist/aromatherapist and both of my massage therapists. The value you receive is amazing as well. Buy this book and change your life!

The Best Heathly Cookbook Ever,
This review is from: The World's Healthiest Foods, Essential Guide for the Healthiest Way of Eating (Paperback)
I absolutely love The World's Healthiest Foods! I am an amateur home chef that enjoys cooking and eating healthy foods. Primarily through years of experimentation I have discovered that eating foods that are great for your health can taste great, too. This isn't necessarily reflected in the many of the cookbooks out there on the market - which is why I am so pleased to have found The World's Healthiest Foods. This book is both cookbook and nutritional resource, and worth every page. What I particularly like about the book is that it is organized according to food (i.e. broccoli, squash, lamb) and provides several recipes for each, as well as easy additions or garnishes. For example, I never realized that sautéed red cabbage could be so delicious simply drizzled with olive oil, seasoned with sea salt, and garnished with fresh grated ginger.

Although I consider myself to be pretty knowledgable in regards to nutrition, I learned a lot from this book. I found the information on food storage and cooking to be very informative, and I realize that I have been losing out on some nutrients. The author is clearly very passionate about food and nutrition, and the book appears to be well researched. I eat a lot of salmon, and I will definetly never eat the farm raised variety after reading this book. This is a must for the library of folks who are concerned about what they are eating.

whfoods is a great website with lots of good information and good recipes. I essentially bought this book to support that effort. The book itself could be 1/4 as large as it is, easily. Every single section of every single chapter includes the same information - very repetitive. That said, there is good information here, and the recipes are usually pretty tasty and are designed with health in mind ( thought I have to admit that I still saute in oil, and roast things until they are caramelized. I'm not a big fan of poaching or pan steaming). Be warned, though, that this is primarily a nutrition primer - the number of actual recipes in here is fairly slim when compared to the massive pagecount. Nutritional breakdown would have been nice, too - the actual food being discussed in each section has a breakdown, but the recipes do not. Most of us are not going to be eating plain steamed greenbeans, so that info is unhelpful by itself. Still, it's well priced for the level of information contained within.

Incredible Amount of Information,

This review is from: The World's Healthiest Foods, Essential Guide for the Healthiest Way of Eating (Paperback)
I purchased this book a few months ago, and I am so impressed with it. The book is packed with tips, information, and recipes. Everytime I sit down and spend some time reading it, I feel like I am receiving a real education in nutrition. Out of all the nutrition/health books that I own, this is by far my favorite.
My entire family, including my young children, have enjoyed all the recipes we have tried. My husband and I have made the switch to eating this way consistently, and we have both noticed more energy. We were already eating a "healthy" diet, but this book has given us a tool to eat right every day. I am purchasing more copies for members of my extended family.

This review is from: The World's Healthiest Foods, Essential Guide for the Healthiest Way of Eating (Paperback)
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to eat healthy without spending hours in the kitchen. So far everything I have made from this book came out perfect. The author also explains specifics about the nutrients, as well as how to maintain them through different cooking methods. Recipes are easy and no oddball ingredients. This book must have taken a long time to write because there are so many different facts about foods. I am learning so much from reading it. He should have his own show! Hope this helps decide your purchase!

Simple and delicious recipes for eating healthy,
This review is from: The World's Healthiest Foods, Essential Guide for the Healthiest Way of Eating (Paperback)
What I like about The World's Healthiest Foods is that the recipes have few ingredients yet they pack a punch of flavor, while many cookbooks use a ton of ingredients and usually require me to go to the store. If I have a lot of produce in the refrigerator that I need to cook up, I can just turn to that page and find a recipe that is easy and tasty. I've learned several new things about cooking that will change the way I cook for the rest of my life! Other features that I like about The World's Healthiest Foods include the 4 week Healthiest Way of Eating menu plan, the inclusion of herbs and spices as healthy foods, the chapter on health-promoting nutrients (which makes it easy to look up the foods that contain the nutrients I need such as calcium), and the chapter on disease-fighting foods.

An excellent and encyclopedic reference book with recipes for the "Healthiest Way" to prepare food items and with "Best Ways" and "Questions" & "Answers" for each food item. Well organized. A lot of thought, dedication, and effort has obviously gone into it's production. Will make a most throughtful gift for family members and friends. I would like to see a hard copy edition sometime. Very Highly recommended.
