Book Description

October 1, 2011

The Worlds of Hunt Slonem investigates the life and work of this fascinating American artist. Once the enfant terrible of New York’s art world, Hunt Slonem (b. 1951) depicts both natural subjects—birds and butterflies—and portraits—voodoo saints and Abraham Lincoln–in his jubilant, singular paintings. Using multiplicity as a governing principle, Slonem has created a body of work as inimitable—and wildly colorful—as it is recognizable. This in-depth monograph, which spans Slonem’s boyhood in Hawaii to his training at Tulane University and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture to his life today, split between New York and New Orleans, features more than 600 vibrant illustrations. Dominique Nahas delves deep beneath the decorative surface of Slonem’s work to reveal what informs and influences this original and enigmatic artist.

Praise for The Worlds of Hunt Slonem:
"The Worlds of Hunt Slonem
[is] an eye-popping survey of more than 600 illustrations by the legendary style setter." -Houston Chronicle

5.0 out of 5 stars The Strange Enchanted World of Hunt Slonem October 11, 2011
Format:Hardcover
Hunt Slonem has been fascinating his collectors and the many galleries and exhibitions and books where he has been seen over the past years. Certain books or catalogues have focused on one of his chosen subjects, but this very beautifully designed and curated book, with running commentary by Dominique Nahas that takes the time to investigate the artist's mind and soul and visions, is hands down the most comprehensive book on Hunt Slonem to appear before the general public.

Slonem is fascinated by birds - exotic birds in particular - and he lives in an aviary surrounded by his models. That is perhaps the reason his paintings of parrots and other tropical birds are so fully realized, but the difference in how Slonem paints his subjects is how he elects to group them in broad spectra of spaces. His colors are rich and vivid. But birds are only one aspect of his selected arenas of visual entertainment. He is fascinated by early movie stars, historical figures, saints, voodoo ceremonies, jewels - anything that captures his imagination and allows him to create vistas of repeated forms in a lyrical manner.

Nahas provides a complete biography of this artist, form birth through training to current paintings and exhibitions. In that Hunt Slonem has been a representational artist active in New York for many years in ways qualifies him as an 'outsider'. He does not follow trends but instead paints what he loves to observe. His style and technique have become instantly recognizable around the world. Grady Harp, October 11

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is itself a work of art January 30, 2012
Format:Hardcover
When a book about the works of an artist is itself a most impressive work of art it deserves your serious attention. This remarkable achievement by Dominique Nahas provides a substitute for nearly all of us of spending time with Hunt Slonem and his enormous quantity of art works. Like many others, I think, I am not overwhelmed with a great many of Slonem's works, but when I deeply enjoy some it is quite an experience. The text by Nahas is deeply textured and most impressive for its intellectual depth. Slonem should be very, very appreciative of this masterful book. No successful artist could ask for more.
