The essays in the book are scholarly while remaining accessible to an interested reader. Students of history as well as music lovers will find this a rewarding experience.

Were I reading a hard copy of the book, this would probably be a 4 or 5 star review. Unfortunately, the kindle edition is incomplete: nearly every line is missing the last several letters if not a complete word. The result is nigh-unreadable prose. This was not a cheap purchase (at more than $25 for the digital edition), and I expect better quality from amazon. Do not purchase the kindle edition of this book.

Well written. Gives a wonderful insight into the time, world events and places that shaped JSB. I will go back to this often.
