5.0 out of 5 stars Darn Good
O.K. Let's face it . If you are the average Dylan fan, you play guitar , know a lot of his songs and over the years have forced a lot of friends to listen to you. But the passion that Joel Gilbert puts into this disc makes you want to jump up and dust off your axe and start jamming. His versions of the material circa 65-66 are just great. But the passion that Joel Gilbert puts into this disc makes you want to jump up and dust off your axe and start jamming. His versions of the material circa 65-66 are just great. The band has got the groove of the original sound ,and Gilbert is not bashful when he belts it out, the harmonica riffs are perfect. The great thing about this disc is that it never seems a parody of Bob even when Gilbert is out and out imitating that "voice " that perhaps should not be imitated but respected. For all Dylan fans who dig cover versions by known artists this is a must to add to your collection. " Gotta Serve Somebody " reminds me of Tom Robinson Band meeting Lou Reed on speed. Enjoy

Folks, this is the REAL deal. Joel Gilbert MUST be the luckiest man on earth, to be blessed with the talents to PLAY these songs and do them justice is an amazing gift; but he also has the look, the passion, and the VOICE as well. I have every CD Bob Dylan has ever released, I love DYLAN; THIS cd is a MUST have for any true Dylan fan. The band has an added edge about them with their sound being spot on for the touring Dylan sound I was lucky enough to hear twice last year. Joel is to be commended too in that he gives the fans something from each era of Dylan's rich legacy, complete with the Dylan sneer and cynicism on Like a Rolling Stone. If anything some of the songs have a little more bite thanks to being produced in the here and now. Excellent guitar work and harmonica play. Things Have Changed is personal favorite, and this version is phenomenal. On Hurricane, you can FEEL Joel's anger and outrage. Positively 4th street is another piece of cathartic relief, you can feel the daggers in every word. There is something here for everyone, Flawless musicianship, great songs, excellent production. Try it, you will be glad you did!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Novel Concept, not a novelty ..., February 27, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The World's Only Bob Dylan Tribute Band (Audio CD)
Not a novelty record, but a novel concept, Highway 61 Revisited's first album distinguishes itself from other tribute band discs by virtue of the fact that it actually sounds like a rare collection of "alternate" versions recorded by Bob himself. The attention to detail is so precise, and Joel Gilbert inhabits Dylan's prime-of-life persona so thoroughly that, instead of sounding like the transparent apings of an impersonator, the tracks could pass as outtakes from the Bootleg Series Box-set. In an era where "tribute album" automatically implies flavor-of-the-week artists inflicting their poseur-like quirkiness upon the venerated songs of a given musical legend, Highway 61 Revisited's offering goes that heroic step further with attempted authenticity. It's a tremendous risk, but they pull it off magnificently. I'm filing this disc in the heart of my comprehensive Dylan collection.

Why not just get a Dylan album? I could understand maybe seeing them live, but why buy this when you can get the real thing?

It is an absolute treat to go see HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED live. And I was curious to see,,,,, er,,,, hear what they would do on CD. Well, it's really interesting. They perform the cream of Dylan, with total energy, and enthusiasm. It's as if Bob was actually hungry, and giving his all.
Thank you, Joel, for a fantastic cd.
For the Dylan completist, and the average Dylan fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dylan Revisited, February 27, 2002
This review is from: The World's Only Bob Dylan Tribute Band (Audio CD)
An excellent tribute to Bob Dylan, performed by the California tribute band Highway 61 Revisited. I enjoyed it very much, a good combination of faithful re-creation with enough their own interpretation to keep it interesting. The songs are drawn from Bob's 60s & 70s catalog, plus the more-recent Oscar-winning "Things Have Changed," mostly faithful to the original versions. "Gotta Serve Somebody" and "All Along The Watchtower" are notable exceptions, they are based on some of Dylan's live arrangements. Leader Joel Gilbert's vocals sound remarkably like Bob, while avoiding the pitfall of many tribute acts by not trying to sound TOO much like Bob.

Nobody sings Dylan like Dylan. That being said: Joel Gilbert is a great listen. He is (I think) very passionate about what he does. He also directed Documetaries about Dylan (2 that I know of) Check them out: Home Movies Dylan Tour 1966 and Dylan Tours 1966-1974 Through the Camera of Berry Feinstein. He also has another CD of Dylan songs called "Masters of Dylan." He's not Bob but he is very good. Check out www.highway61revisited.com for a great web site.

Highway 61 Revisited Tribute Band gives me a deja vu. It's spooky and amazing to listen to this CD, hear Bob Dylan at his best, sing along, then suddenly realize it's Joel Gilbert and his band.... another generation who feel as strongly as I once did and reproduce this perfect sound. Mazel Tov, guys!! I love it!
