Book Description

World's Top Photographers September 15, 2006
"The World's Top Photographers: Photojournalism" presents an awe-inspiring showcase of the very best in era-defining photographs from around the world. Not only is it a beautiful and thought-provoking collection, but it also provides a compelling record of some of the key moments in recent world history. Although there are many single images that encapsulate an event, the photojournalists who go to such lengths to capture the shot often remain under the radar. The latest in the successful "World's Top Photographers" series pays homage to the portfolios of the world's leading photojournalists, celebrating work that is by turns gritty, provocative, beautiful and often shocking. All this is combined with incisive interviews with the photographers, revealing the stories behind each individual shot and providing greater insight into the human stories behind them. From battlefields and civil unrest to the highest achievements of human endeavour, "Photojournalism" brings together a collection of current events that have defined our times.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but, May 16, 2008

In some ways, this book is interesting-interviews and biographies of some top photo journalists. However, it is full of stereotyped photograghs. Endless war pictures, gritty images of disasters or third world people struggling. Photojournalism is about all of life, both the gritty and the joyful. There isn't much joyful but there are plenty of cliches. I would get this book from the library, study it and return it. But not buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, April 30, 2007
This review is from: The World's Top Photographers: Photojournalism: And the Stories Behind Their Greatest Images (Hardcover)
This is a great, highly recommended book of photos with captions of some of the best photojournalists of the past twenty years. The bios have great descriptions of how each photographer got into the business, and also what type of gear they use. A great glimpse into this powerful art form.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not the World's Top Photojournalism, December 20, 2008
This review is from: The World's Top Photographers: Photojournalism: And the Stories Behind Their Greatest Images (Hardcover)
I really wanted to love this book, but it failed to deliver. It is plagued by the same shortcomings as many other books of this genre - the editor is so determined to say something, that the impact of each photographer's work is drowned out by that voice. Although it contains work from some fine photographers, any "Top" book that doesn't include the work of the world's best photojournalist- James Nachtwey - loses a lot of authority.
The reproduction is marginal; the photo selected for the cover shows an attempt at dodging, the rest of the photos are inconsistent.
If you are a photographer seeking inspiration, look at "Cuba" by David Alan Harvey Cuba (National Geographic) (Spanish Edition), or "Inferno" by James Nachtwey.Inferno
