This review is from: Worlds of Ultima 1: The Savage Empire (CD-ROM)
A failed experiement by some wizard in blackrock use takes the Avatar to the eoden, a reigion of Earth (likely the jungles of central mexico or pan-am) where a collection of tribes from all over the world have set up settlements here there and everywhere in this "valley" called Eoden(pronounced as Iolo's name "Yo'don")., basically a board for the game with boundries to the outside world. This(unlike Martian Dreams-except maybe Cowboy Garret) has the usual haphazardly placed LB britannian characters like Dupre(Dorkea) and others using thier altarnate names. I just call my self Dr. Jones or Captain Mutt, swashbucker/bard extrordiare ha!. All of the NPcs from Sosaria are here in thier regressed primiteve form but it works well and the game is quite fun, in fact it is a refreshing take on the usual castle britannan/eight townes/shrines/hylothiest dungeon opposition affair on the 6 predecessors. This and Martian Dreams are a new and refreshing take on Ultima and it's hero and the NPC's involved in these new worlds. Spark does reference Eoden in Ultima VII and Smith references Sutekh from Martian Dreams and Ultima V and VI so these tie in witrh the series and are not segrateded "universes" with no real relation as one might think. The realitive continuety is quite real to the main Ultima epoch. Though Savage Empire is very good and quite fun,
Martian Dreams is better still and leaves out the Iolo/Shamino/Dupre team all to gether as they are mostly useless and in here for just being the familiar Ultima heros. Aside from thier useless Ultima VI in-jokes and banter they are just along for the ride, and should have stayed in Sosaria where they belonged. this game and the new characters of Jimmy and Professor Rafkin are great and of better(practical)use as record keeper/advisor respectively, as are Nellie Bly and Dr. Spektor from the following adventure. in reguards to the professor and the doctor, they are practically like taking an owner's manual along with you in the game so you don't need it. All history and lore of both realms are related clearly as your advisors translate the babling nonsensical world about you(the player) until you are quite the expert yourself. More complex plot games(including Ultima) should incorerate this buddy system into the game rather than making you stumble along not appreciating fully what you are actually doing. I wish, like with movies, they would sell these vintage(in the market, not aftermarket asking therse ridiculous prices) becasue theres games were made during Origin's peak "renasaunce" period when the programmers actually enjoyed thier work(and it shows in the lite in-jokes and humor of the 1989/90 period) and until EA got thier dirty wraith claws of Astaroth/Nosfentor/Faulini promises into the works it was a time of great games with elaborate things to do. What other game now could you make a bomb out of raw materials, it's not in the games today becasue of "time constraints" much like movies in the 70's games of today are following the mirror pattern layed out in the past!

This review is from: Worlds of Ultima 1: The Savage Empire (CD-ROM)
The Worlds of Ultima titles took the Avatar into strange and mysterious places outside the scope of a conventional dungeon-based RPG. This one visits Eodon, an Amazonian world dominated by dinosaurs. There are dozens of characters to interact with, including stone-age tribes, mad scientists and lizardmen. Get ready to fight for survival as gorillas, pterodanodons and tigers encroach. All this is done in a familiar engine somewhere between those used to Ultima VI and Ultima VII
