Spells backfire to create merry mayhem in Coville's (My Teacher Is an Alien) fluffy tale. Maybelle Clodnowski, a bumbling fairy godmother, has been given one last chance to do her job correctly before her heavenly supervisor strips her of her wings and wand. She is put in charge of reforming young Susan Pfenstermacher, whose quest for perfection has alienated kids and adults alike. Adding to the chaos are Zozmagog, a cherub who, thanks to Maybelle's sloppy godmothering, has been raised as an imp; and Edna Prim, Maybelle's mentor, who has been Fairy Godmother of the Year for 147 years running. The broadly humorous scenarios, despite their fantastic premise, may inspire a worthwhile musing or two on the subject of perfection. Illustrations supply a Bavarian woods?like fairy tale setting. Ages 8-12.

Gr. 3^-5. It's been one screwup after another for fairy godmother Maybelle Clodnowski, and her boss is threatening to take away her wings and wand if she messes up again. Her "last chance" assignment is to help Susan--a girl so perfect everyone disdains her--become likable. Unknown to Maybelle, a mischievous imp (really a cherub raised by imps who got him because Maybelle delivered him to the wrong address) has been sabotaging her good deeds and is now hatching a plot to make sure Maybelle fails again. Katherine Coville's nicely detailed black-and-white drawings depict a cast of wonderfully offbeat characters who, for all their supernatural powers, still find themselves in sticky, complicated human situations. The plot is well crafted, fast paced, and filled with the wacky humor kids crave. As an extension, youngsters may want to try acting out favorite scenes from this story, which is actually based on one of Coville's musical plays.
