Former copper John Latymer has retired from the police and become a literary tour guide for groups of American tourists. There's not much excitement to his new job, but the pay is steady, and the hours allow him to spend time with his wife, Tess. But Latymer seems to have a knack for getting involved in crime solving, despite being retired. When a young student discovers the horribly mutilated body of a local farmer and calls on Latymer for help, it's hard for the former policeman to refuse. The murder closely resembles a still-unsolved crime that took place nearly 50 years earlier, and Latymer is convinced there's a connection. As he digs further into the case, Latymer finds many odd elements: violent protests against genetically modified crops, suspects who mysteriously disappear, and witchcraft all play roles in the solution. An entertaining new entry in a reliable if somewhat predictable British procedural series. Emily Melton
