Worm composting is an incredibly efficient way to convert kitchen scraps, junk mail and cardboard into nutrient-rich compost for your garden. Worms begin eating waste in the lowest tray, and then migrate upward as food sources in that tray are exhausted. By allowing worms to migrate upward, the worms separate themselves from the finished compost that is ready for the garden. Besides the worm castings that are produced through this process, the Worm Factory also produces a second type of compost. As waste is broken down, moisture filters through your Worm Factory, taking nutrient-rich particles with it. This liquid fertilizer, know as leachate is gathered in the special collection tray of the Worm Factory and can easily be drained from the spigot. Simply add a handful of worms and your organic waste to the bottom tray. The worms will start processing the food. Once the bottom tray is filled add another tray. The worms migrate upward to the newest food source leaving the bottom tray full of nutrient rich compost. As waste is broken down, moisture filters through the system taking nutrient-rich particles with it. You can drain organic liquid fertilizer right from the spigot. It's compact square design gives the Worm Factory the smallest footprint of all worm composters. I have the five tray system an love the Worm Factory. The Worm Factory has been my most pleasant experience in raising worms. You absolutely can raise red wrigglers in a plastic tub. This system is better for many reasons. Unlike a plastic tub you tend to worry about this system staying too moist, as it trays help distribute the moisture. The worms can also navigate to the tray that they like best, whether they want to tunnel around in the food layer, or the more fiberous layers that you may have.

Another large benefit of this system is you do not need to worry when you harvest your castings. Simply stop feeding in one of the lower trays, and feed in the tray above it. This way the worms will move, and you will not have to worry about tossing out your worms and worm eggs when you harvest the castings into your garden.

I did a lot of reading up on this system, and since I live so far in the north I was looking for a system that could be odorless and be kept inside during the winter. This system is odorless. I really can't say enough about how well designed this system is, it really makes vermiculture easy.

I have had mine for about 3 years now and it works great. The directions that came with it eventually ended up in the composter. I suggest reading up on worm composting to get a better idea on how to use it. I put most of my food waste in it. I had to purchase a few more trays so that it would last the winter without emptying the trays. The worms don't like the cold. I highly recomend this. The great thing about this is that it so simple to maintain. I have left mine alone for a few months and in the spring there is always enough worms to start over. My gardens just love this stuff.

In 3 weeks, the worms have really demonstrated their appreciation of their new home. They are athletic - zooming around all over, eating well, and reproducing. It's convenient [except the top is drippy if you need to put it down somewhere] and is just what I was expecting. A word of caution though - the coir brick expands A LOT with water. Make sure you have a large container.
