5.0 out of 5 stars a great introduction to the quirky world of Daniel Pinkwater......, May 11, 2007
This review is from: The Worms of Kukumlima (Hardcover)
I think that this was the first book I read, written by the great humorous author, Daniel Pinkwater. Though, THE WORMS OF KUKUMLIMA could be read to young children, it is also appealing to adults. That is the beauty of most of Pinkwater's writing. He succeeds in appealing to his younger reading audience without patronizing them, and still entertaining his older readers who might be reading along.

Ronald is a quirky young guy whose eccentric uncle, Sir Charles Pelicanstein, takes him on a quest to Africa, seeking super-intelligent worms who reside in Kukumlima. Of course, chaos occurs, but it is very entertaining chaos. This is the kind of chaos you will stay up nights reading about, just because you can't put the book down. The first time I read this, I saw it as some sort of surrealist movie, playing in my mind. I could hear the voices of all of the characters, including one particular worm that they encounter (!). I won't devulge more plot details, so as not to ruin the experience of reading this book for you. I was honestly surprised that not more people had reviewed it before me. it's probably one of Daniel Pinkwater's best and underappreciated novellas. Highly reccomended!!!
