Worms is a love it or hate it game. The AI on the single player modes is slight improvement over past versions, but it's still not impressive. Besides -- the ONLY way to play this game is with friends. In single player mode, games will last NO MORE than 20 minutes, which makes for a nice little lunchtime break stress release, or a quick calm down before bed.

The backgrounds are nice, and quirky as usual. Despite complaints, there are PLENTY of weapons -- more than you would need to wreak gooey havoc.

The graphics are first rate, and the controls smooth, but I would have liked more background music choices -- I really do enjoy the different "voices" that you can assign to custom made teams. Color choices would have been a nice option -- but you cant have everything....

When playing a 1 on 3 game against PSP AI, I have found the AI logic a bit lacking. The AI goes out of it's way to attack the human player, and will forgo simple strikes against other AI players to goon up on the human player. That being said -- the 4 player human game is one of the best non-shooter multiplayer games that I have played in a long time...

******* To play this game you MUST upgrade to PSP Firmware 2.6. It is included on the game disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Its awesome, November 15, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Worms Open Warfare (Video Game)
I got this thing because I am a big fan of the worms series, and was thrilled when the PSP got one. The game has several good things, such as:

-It got back to the classic 2d style, where you can sit down and play, whereas in 3d you have to pass tutorials and all that junk.

-Unlike some people say, I think that the game has plenty enough guns, and if you make your own, you can own pink worms with unlimited air strikes for example. Or how aboat a barrage of never-ending homing missles?

-The game still has the funny voices, which is good.

The bad things about this game are:

-NO HOLY HAND GRENADE! The Holy Hand Grenade was the most awesome weapon ever, and now it's gone. That is the only bad thing, but there's still plenty of guns in this game, I mean, all I REALLY use is the bazooka, air strikes, homing missiles, shotgun, grenade, cluster bomb, and uzi. That is a lot, but there are even more than that. But no super sheep..........

4.0 out of 5 stars those wacky tempermental anelids., March 28, 2006
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Worms Open Warfare (Video Game)
Being a fan of the Worms games since Worms: Armageddon for PC, I was excited to learn that the PSP was getting a title of it's own. After all, there's great fun to be had blowing up cute little worms with big damn guns whilst riding shotgun during a roadtrip.

Yes, you can create your own team with worms' names as strange as only you can concieve.
Yes, you can create your own custom schemes. Want to beat the snot out of your opponents with nothing more than Ninja Rope, Kamikaze, Fire Punch, and Dragon Ball? Feel free.

However, there are some notable absences in the weapons department. I have yet to see Patsy's Magic Bullet, Homing Pigeon, Concrete Donkey, Salvation Army, Skunk, Old Woman, or (my personal favorite) HOLY HAND GRENADE. They may very well be unlockables (I sincerely hope so) or they could have been completely omitted. I've only been playing the game for a short while. Don't get entirely let down, however, if your favorite weapon isn't in the game. There are PLENTY of entertaining ways to waste worms wirelessly.

I also have yet to play opponents via Wi-Fi, but that's because I don't know anyone else with a PSP.

All in all, this game is superb fun in ways only a Worms game can be.

On 4/23/08 my mom took me to the Game Exchange in Augusta Maine to trade in a few games to get some psp games.I was already certian that I was going to get Tony Hawk's Under Ground 2 Remixed. When I was deciding to get Mortal Combat or Lemings I asked the owner about the Worms Open Warfare. The owner said he liked it and I decided I would give it a shot. Oh was the guy right, the weapons in this game are amazing, the worms look so cool. Finally the best thing is you can pick where you want to be, like at the Beach,Arctic,Hallowen,Jungle,City, even outer space.Basiclly if your looking for a game that has Bombs,Mines, Exploding sheep and more ,then buy Worms Open Warfare.

ps.There is no blood in it.

This is truly a game for the whole family! We had already enjoyed previous versions of this game, but as much as now. This is probably the perfect game for the PSP platform. Gameplay is not overly engaging or lengthy, so a quick game during your commute is no problem. My kids love it too, because of the humerous animations and "weapons" available for attacking your opponents.

Definitely a MUST HAVE for anyone's library.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best or even a great installment, August 15, 2010
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars

Worms for the PSP. Of course I was interested, but with justifiable reservations.

Worms and I go back a long way, even to the DOS days on the PC. The concept of the game is great. It doesn't take itself seriously, it's easy to learn, and hard to master. My best memories were with the original and playing with family members via hot seat. I went the extra mile and recorded my own voice saying silly things and replaced the sound files in the originals. Oh the long hours of side splitting comedy backed by solid gameplay.

But over the years, I've come to be cautious when a Worms title is released. Sometimes they get it right, and sometimes they botch the whole thing. I've played titles that had me completely disappointed, and others that I couldn't put down. So what makes the difference?

The answer to that question must take into consideration the release and even the platform of a particular release. With this PSP release, I have to say that the designers stayed true to the winning gameplay concepts, but fell short on the ability to play the game.

For what it's worth, the game offers a LOT of weapons, and the gameplay mechanics are mostly here. But the Achille's heel that brings it all down is how the game enables (or disables) the player here.

I'm not going to fault the PSP as a platform, because the PSP has shown that games designed for other systems can work great on it. There are numerous ports from other consoles, and from the complex, graphically intense, to the fast and nitty gritty, the PSP can do it, provided that the desingers take the limitation of the platform into account whilst taking advantages of the positive attributes. Unfortunately, there is one major flaw to this game; the proportion of map size in relation to screen size.

Now this is an important concept here. I'm not saying the maps are too big. I'm also not saying that the PSP screen is too small. What I'm saying is that the correlation between map size and a screen size in which the game is playable is the problem. On most Worms titles the entire map is about 3 or 4 screen sizes, give or take. But on the PSP, the maps are gargantuan compared to the screen size. That's not necessarily bad, unless we consider the fact that in order to view the map in a way that allows for strategical play, it becomes unplayable.

Zooming out to get a good idea of where one stands is good enough just for that. But to launch an attack, move a worm, or otherwise play the game whilst having this view is cumbersome and next to impossible. Conversely, being able to play while zoomed in means that we're missing a lot of our surroundings, at times including being able to fire on close targets. For me, this makes the game tedious and cuts the fun in half.

The other major fault to the game is that the environment is not nearly as destructible as other installments in the series. In the original Worms for example, the environment was very sensitive to damage, even to the point that it could radically change the strategy and tactics one would use throughout the game. Even a missile fired at an enemy that missed might have some chain reaction effect of say, blowing a hole in the ground whilst tossing a mine into the air. A closeby worm fell into the hole with the mine coming down, killing him, causing that worm to explode... and the chain might continue. But with Worms Open Warfare, the amount of damage the environment takes coupled with the less than exaggerated physics means that one rarely sees these accidents, mishaps, and hilarious chain reactions.

It is still Worms and plays like Worms. It's not the worst installment but it leaves a lot to be desired. If you've never played the series, then you probably won't know what you're missing and may be very happy with this one. Long time fans with expectations will likely be let down.

4.0 out of 5 stars 10 year old son loves it, September 14, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Worms Open Warfare (Video Game)
I bought this game for my son's 10th birthday, and he loves it! When he showed it to me, I thought it seemed really redundant, like he was doing the same thing over and over and over, but he and his 7-year old brother laugh like crazy when they're playing. He doesn't sit and play it for hours, like some of his other games, but he does enjoy it, and told me it lots of fun!
