5.0 out of 5 stars The Worst Is Over: What to Say When Every Moment Counts
Beautifully written - eloquent, thoughtful, sensitive and, at the same time, scholarly and professional - this book is a "must read" for physicians, psychologists, social workers, police, fire, emergency personnel - in short, anyone who responds to crises and knows that the right words can soothe, promote healing, and initiate psychological recovery. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good basics - not in much depth
The idea of "verbal first aid" fascinates me. How much can we do with words alone in a crisis? Judith Acosta's book says we can do quite a lot -calm people down, make them feel safe, even promote healing.

Most of her techniques are drawn from guided imagery and hypnosis - stuff I was already very familiar with. I describe some of this experience in my book...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Worst Is Over: What to Say When Every Moment Counts, March 19, 2002
The Worst Is Over takes the reader through a discovery of how Verbal First Aid is used to ease physical pain, conquer traumatic events, and work through emotional dysfunction. The book provides a "new language" to be employed in a vast variety of stressful, traumatic, and life-changing events. It excels as a training manual for interpersonal interaction. In view of the events of September 11, 2001, The Worst Is Over is mandatory reading for anyone with a colleague, friend, or family member suffering the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. A chapter for Caregivers is also provided. The Worst Is Over is sure to become a classic and serve as a reference point for how to deal with the uncertainties in our lives in this time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, December 10, 2006
I am a professional hypnotist, also firefighter and completing paramedic training at this writing. I'm surprised to see only one reader review of this fine piece of work, so I'd like to second exactly what Dr. Levenson wrote above. Definitely an extremely valuable piece of work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all, especially parents, July 10, 2010
ASIN:1588720241 The Worst Is Over: What to Say When Every Moment Counts--Verbal First Aid to Calm, Relieve Pain, Promote Healing, and Save Lives]]
I am a retired Air Force Colonel who has had a very exciting career. I have experienced considerable combat, aircraft emergencies, injuries to others and raised children who have been very successful in their adult life. This book, The Worst is Over, address from a common sense view what should be done for injured individuals, panicked individuals, or for someone who is experiencing or facing a new or demanding challenge. Really the best I have ever read concerning this condition. It should be given to all future parents which would prepare them for the future!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mandatory, May 26, 2010

Reading this book should be mandatory for every health care professional (I am a retired nurse). It could indeed save lives. Non-medical folks should also read it - you never know when you may be first at the scene of an accident or a heart-attack victim. What you learn from this book could help you as well as the person you are trying to help. This should be taught right along with CPR.

This book is an easy read and so worth the short time it takes to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every nurse should read it, May 17, 2009
I'm an RN working on an oncology unit. There have been times when I've cared for patients who are suffering enormously and the medication just doesn't help enough. After reading this book, I have new weapons against pain and mental anguish. I'd love to see every nursing school include this in the curriculum. Nurses who practice in emergency rooms, transplant units, children's hospitals, burn units, and cancer treatment centers in particular can use the techniques taught in this practical and research-based book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for emergency workers, July 4, 2009

I am an emergency responder and long ago learnt 'the healing power of the human touch'. I have seen it work. I wish I had had these tools at that time. I had been using a version of it but some of the concepts in this book are so powerful they will save lives. For those who don't think the laying on of hands or words can save lives really don't understand their power. Words are tremendously powerful on their own couple them with appropriate actions and we have been given the gift to save lives. A must for all Police, Ambulance and Fire fighters who regularly are with people who 'stand' on the knife edge. Give yourself a chance and read this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Words can help!, November 17, 2007

Dr. Allan M. Cyna (Adelaide, South Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This unique book would be a useful resource not only for paramedics but for clinicians, nurses, midwivs and other paramedical staff dealing with patients in an acute clinical care setting. The use of hypnotic principles in everyday communications with patients faciliates subconscious responses that result in changes in patient mood, perception and behaviours. Such communications, when used as an additional adjunctive tool, can be of immense value perioperatively, in obstetrics and when interacting with children. The authors are to be congratulated on this excellent work which has a range of useful examples that could be adapted by acute care providers to enhance patients' experience both prior to and during their hospital care.
