Fabulous story with a delightful romance,
By
This review is from: Worth Every Step (Paperback)
I could not be happier having read this novel. I truly felt I was on this adventure with the characters.
Mary Kate is using her college degree at her home town school and dating the assistant principal who is the catch of the county yet gets on her last nerve enough that she has already declined his initial marriage proposal. She is entranced at the thought of reaching the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro and at age twenty-four sets out to do it. Addison is the American born child of a British banker and a Peruvian mother who divorced when she was fourteen. She continued to school in America and considers herself American. She has completed her MBA and her father insists she move to London to work in his company. Her last gasp of independence is a trek to the highest free standing peak in the world. As always with this author the writing is fresh and the characters beautifully, warmly fleshed out. The humor is spot on and laugh out loud funny. The friendship that develops between the members of the hiking group and especially between Addison & Mary Kate are totally fun to read. The romance that develops between Mary Kate and Addison is fascinating to watch and the passion that unfolds is erotically intense. Love the story. This is a keeper! I first read this story online. It was excellent then. Now it is even better. I must admit that some of the changes threw me at first, such as names and smaller plot lines. In the online version, the guy without his luggage was with a different group for the climb, for example. Once my mind quit getting confused about that, I enjoyed the story. It is well written, obviously including some of the experiences KG herself enjoyed on her climb of Kili. And the ending was great, KG. You really had me going there for a minute. That is definitely different from the online story!
So, if you've never read KG's stories, you will find quality writing and realistic story plots and people. If you've read her online stories, her published books are polished with additional content and story revisions to make a better read. And if you've read KG's published works, why are you reading this? You already know how good she is :-) Worth Every Step

The need for adventure leads to romance,
By Sage320 (Newport News, VA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Worth Every Step (Paperback)
KG MacGregor uses the beauty of Africa and the majestic setting of Mt. Kilimanjaro as the setting of this novel about doing something daring in your life.
Mary Kate Sasser feels a need to do something spectacular in her life. Life in a small Southern town is stifling her and she craves adventure. She can't explain to her fiancé and family so that they'll understand why she needs to go to Kenya and climb Kilimanjaro, but go she must. Addison Falk is headed to the same location for a similar reason. She has just finished her MBA degree and her father expects her to come to London and take her place in the family firm. Addison isn't sure what she wants to do with her life, but she knows working for her father isn't it. She decides that climbing Kilimanjaro will give her a chance to do something exciting and some thinking. When the women are paired together as climbing buddies, they form a pact to help each other reach the summit. That act comes to be symbolic not only of them achieving their quest, but finding themselves and each other. There are three major characters in this story, the two women and the mountain. As with all of MacGregor's books, the characters are well written and the story is solid. It is the mountain that sets the tone though. No matter what happens to Mary Kate and Addison the mountain is there hovering over them. Massive and dangerous it represents the challenges they face and the decisions they have to make. There is plenty of humor and sexual tension, but always there is the adventure and the need it represents in both of them to change their lives. MacGregor has put her personal knowledge of that environment to good use in this book. Anyone looking for a book to provide some hours of enjoyable reading should give Worth Every Step a chance. Adventure, suspense, romance, sex, it has a little for everyone.

Everything A Romance Novel Should Be,
By Dena (Washington) - See all my reviews

Just a very solid story well told. The protagonist is a Southern girl, feeling confined and restless after returning to her hometown from college. She watches a documentary on Kilimanjaro and decides to go to Africa and climb the mountain. When her boyfriend/fiance expresses no interest in the trip, she goes without him (check). In Africa, while climbing the mountain she meets and falls in love with a beautiful woman (check). And nothing is the same again. Good writing, good characters, good storyline.

What a ride!,

KG, again, has produced a story you get all wrapped up in. Through some wonderful characters I felt I'd experienced the climb myself. Both women take the journey of a lifetime & learn something about themselves along the way.
As always w/MacGregor stories, warm characters (including the supporting cast), strong storyline & her unique wit make this a book well worth the investment of your time.

How does walking translate to an well written adventure?? Many people have tried to get you to understand what it takes and how it feels to try to hike to the tallest peaks in our world but MacGregor has done it best. Plus we still have time to read about the romance that takes place along the journey. Two different women the same goal.
I loved this book. I hope to still have it when I am 80.

I read this book in just a few hours. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. The characters were multi dimensional young women dealing with the pressures of so many their age. I thought the hike up the mountain would be boring to read about but it turned out to be really interesting. I found myself wishing I was hiking with them. This is only the third book I've read that could be characterized as a lesbian romance. But it is by far my favorite. The next morning I ordered two more books by KG MacGregor. When I find an author I love I try to read as much of her work as I can.

For anyone who has read my reviews, it is no secret that KG MacGregor is one of my top 5 favorite authors in this genre. That said, this review is probably a little biased.
Here, she introduces two interesting and lovable characters. First, is Mary Kate Sasser. Mary Kate is a teacher from small town Mooresville, Georgia. Her long-time boyfriend, school Principal Bobby, is getting impatient. In his mind, it's time for the two of them to get married. Mary Kate has been resistant to even have the discussion because she doesn't feel the `passion' for Bobby she expects to feel for a lifelong partner. Always trying to find that something missing in her life, Mary Kate signs up for an adventure to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Bobby tells her she's crazy for going and that he doesn't support her in this adventure. That is, until he sees she's serious and is convinced she'll never make it on her own. Being the chauvinist he is, he decides to join her so she has someone to take care of her, but she tells him it's too late. She's extremely relieved he concedes. Almost too relieved, and that scares her. While on the adventure, Mary Kate meets Addison Falk from Indiana. Addison has had bad experiences with past lovers and withdraws from the world. Her close friends convince her to take on the mountain. She reluctantly agrees, only to have her friends back out just before the trip. Not interested in any kind of relationship, she finds herself immediately drawn to straight Kate. Kate unexpectedly finds Addison irresistible as well. As they tackle the mountain they get to know each other and realize they both need changes in their respective lives, most importantly, they need to make the changes together. Bottom Line - Wow. There is not a wasted word, page or chapter in this book. It's worth every word.

Worth Every Step by KG MacGregor - a review from Car
ISBN: 1594931429 Bella Books 2009, 229 pages, paperback, $14.95 This book accomplishes the nearly impossible: it manages to be believable while it depicts two women falling in love in just a couple of weeks. Normally, I would scoff at such a plot. But in the case of this skilled writer, and an intricately woven tale of a great adventure, I enjoyed myself. The adventure to which I refer is the climbing of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Two women meet as strangers at the beginning of a group expedition, and they become close friends throughout. Southern teacher Mary Kate Sasser takes this trip to challenge herself. The fact that her fiance Bobby takes no interest in the trip, and pooh-poohs her desire for this adventure, is troubling. Mary Kate is slowly coming to realize that he will never appreciate her adventuresome spirit, and will always patronize her for her desire for travel and adventure. This is even more problematic because Bobby is her school's assistant principal, and is therefore also her boss. If she breaks up with him at the end of the trip, there are major repercussions. Her family and coworkers all think he is perfect for her, and she lives in a small town where she is absolutely expected to marry him and raise his kids. So what if she isn't interested in that? Addison Falk is the opposite. An out lesbian, with wealthy parents who live in London and Peru, she currently resides in her home town of Miami. But her dad is pressuring her to move to London and work in his financial firm. In fact, he has it all planned out. He has even rented her an apartment in London, and told her all about its great lesbian and gay community. (And, if she happens to give up all of this lesbian nonsense while she's there, and meets and marries a nice young gentlemen, well....so much the better.) And, as an added incentive, he is selling the Miami family home out from under her! She'll have to move within a couple of weeks of the end to her African adventure. So what are these two women to do? What else? Fall in love!!! Okay, so the plot is a bit hokey and formulaic. But the writing is quite enjoyable, the scenery spectacular, and the adventure is new and exciting. How many books have you read about climbing Mt Kili (which the author actually did, BTW)? For me, this was a first. Four stars out of five. - Car |
