Product Description

Exiled aristocrat Nicolas Balfour Montague is a cynic and wastrel, the product of a faithless mother who was hanged for treason. Sunken into the gutters and rooming in a run-down tenement, he has one shot at building a new life or ending up like the rest of his disgraced family.

Boarding a train to Nebraska with his former valet, Nicolas finds himself in a mean town with a prejudiced sheriff. Landing in Jail after an encounter with the Sheriff's thugs, his cellmate is Brody Blackwing.

Josie Sullivan is Brody's half-sister. Tough and independent, she's fiercely dedicated to her family. When Josie bails Brody out of jail, she finds herself with two other fines to pay. This is how Nicolas and his valet become Sullivan Farm's hired hands.

Passion simmers and sparks fly in this beautiful epic romance by Eve Asbury. Josie is wonderfully written and her angst is palpable as she struggles to find the courage to open her heart to love, and most importantly to risk.

This review is from: Worth The Risk (Kindle Edition)
Having been enthralled by Every Time You Go Away I was keen to discover more by Eve Asbury and this book did not disappoint. Although not quite up to the intensity of the first story for me, this one also revolved around a seemingly mismatched couple and their relationships with people around them. There are more external events here with threats from the local sheriff, but the core of the story focuses on emotion.

Nicolas was born in Italy, the son of a Count - now dead. He has had to flee to America with nothing as his family's title and assets were seized by the state when his mother was found guilty of treason and hanged. Nicolas has spent his adult life in European capitals as a rake, mainly drunk and with little memory of his decadent pursuits. He is accompanied by his loyal valet Gaston, who manages to get them to Nebraska in the hope of a new life. When they arrive they are set upon by thugs mocking their foreign manner and young Brody Sullivan comes to their aid. Thanks to the corrupt sheriff all 3 land in jail and have to be bailed out by Josie, Brody's sister. In order to repay the relatively large fine to the sheriff they agree to work on Josie's ranch for a month. The ranch is run by Josie and her siblings.

Nicolas is only slowly coming out of his drunken stupor and has the air of a supercilious aristocrat, despite his predicament. Gaston, however, is grateful and polite, as ever.

There are some funny scenes where the worlds collide. The Sullivans and Wolf are all hard working and skilled, Gaston is willing to work, but fairly inept at tasks on the ranch and Nicolas, for all his noble blood, is ill equipped to deal with any actual labour.

The main story is about the relationship between Josie and Nicolas. Josie feels responsible for everyone as the oldest and finds it hard to trust a man who has said that he doesn't even know what love is. Nicolas has to find out who he really is instead of hiding behind the walls of indifference he has created.

The secondary romances and characters are filled with interesting detail - from Wolf with his integrity and deep spiritual awareness of his Native American culture to the irrepressible Gaston who certainly discovers a new world of opportunity in America.

More About the Author

ST Romance author Eve Asbury, and Sensual Romance writer Gayle Eden are also fiction author B.D. Dillon. They are all alter egos of an author whose dreams of writing were put on hold in her twenties while she raised a son and daughter and worked several jobs. Romance novels kept her sane during some of those busy years, which took her from West Virginia to living in a suburb of Washington, DC for fifteen more, until finally settling her in East Tennessee, by the Holston River, where she can write to her hearts content.

A writer who believes in story telling, in giving herself the freedom to write whatever story speaks to her heart. This prolific author says she tries not to limit her characters by outline, but has a vague idea, that generally they run away with. She's found its better to indulge her muse than try and control it. A bit like real life, it happens, and there's always something new and surprising that makes the experience rewarding.
