If you're looking to buy this you probably have 1 of 2 reasons: 1)you want it to aid you in jewelry type work 2)you're doing small timer soldering jobs like retro videogame mods or the like. For both cases these helping hands will probably work fine for you. First impressions weren't great: It came in a small square box. It was just stuffed in there with no protection of any kind. The mag was covered in a plastic hoodie so to speak, that's it. The neck of the mag could have stood to have another 3-5 inches of length but what are you going to do with something that cost 10 bucks?

It's heavy enough to handle small jobs, no problem. But if you want to work on bigger jobs like say soldering caps onto a board to fix your LCD or whatnot, this will no doubt tip over. It'll be too much weight. It doesn't have the option of being screwed down to a table, and even if you rig it to do so, I don't know enough about these things to say whether or not it's arms are strong enough for the extra weight.

I'm giving this 3 stars because it'll work for what I'm going to use it for: Replacing the batteries in my cartridge games. If I bought more helping hands to compare to these, I'd probably lower the score further. But it seems to be designed specifically for jewelry(I think)so for jewelry, I'd say it's a pretty solid 5 star, just to be fair about it.

I read the reviews about several different products like this. I selected this one because it had the LED lights plus the magnfying glass is mounted on the flexible cable. This makes it easier to position the magnifying glass in the right position so you can see the small objects that you are working on.

The base is plastic and is not very heavy. Consequently it is not that stable when you are working on larger objects. I solved that problem by mounting the unit on a wooden base. You can drill two small holes toward the back of the base (being careful not to drill into the wires that go to the light - remove the bottom plate before drilling) and use wood screws to mount the unit to the wooden base. You could also just use a small metal strap to go over the top of the base and screw it into the wooden base.

I find this product to be very handy. It is exactly what I was looking for.

Very bad construction. The base is hardly heavy enough to hold anything. Plus the helping hands do not stay in place, and that defeats the whole point of this thing. Returned it and got the Pro's kit Helping hand. It tries to do too many things such as magnifying glass, soldering iron holder, lamp, but it does not do the primary function well.
I use a soldering station, so I dont need the holder. And I always feel i will melt the unit if touch the plastic base.
The magnifying glass may be of some use, but i have no use for it.
Buying things separately will be much more productive.

I do not use this for soldering. I use it for small things like repairing my eyeglasses or watch. I can't see small things without glasses so the magnifying glass is wonderful when I need to repair them and I don't have to hold a magnifier with one hand and work with the other. When I need both hands to work I use the clips to hold the item and that is so helpful. It is so nice to have something held steady as hands always have some movement even when trying to hold them still and have a magnifying glass right there to see all the tiny details.

This is a great little setup. The helping hands hold things securely and the magnifying glass works well. The only problem I have with this is that the soldering iron holder is a little awkward and can get in the way or tip the whole thing over. If it had a little bit bigger base and moved the iron holder away from the work area a little more it'd get 5 stars.

First off I want to make it known it known thatipersonally use this for soldeing on pcb's and small electronics so this may not apply to you jewlery folk

I recieved the helping hand in great condition and very nice packageing as far ask shipping goes. The led light and magnifying perks are great

ON THE DOWN SIDE
The grip of the hands isnt quite enough for a firm hold on a mid size pcb. The base is rather light and makes the piece feel flimsy. Now as far as actually holstering your soldering iron (as the picture shows it comes with the holster) is quite impossible. The whole assembly just topples over. I use it now for basic help for sokdering but for the tiny work I do on the boards, all I get out of it is extre light and a x2 zoom.

If you could look at this in a store first you would walk on by. I'm changing all of the screws and wing nuts to better stuff just to make this usable.

Not impressed. The lens is plastic and was popped out of its frame before I opened the box. I had to re-glue it into place. Base is not very heavy - I had to center the soldering iron holder in order for it not to tip over (don't expect to be able to mount it like what you see in the picture). The wing nuts and thumb screws are hard to tighten and require pliers to tighten. LED lights work well. For what I got I would recommend looking at one of the cheaper versions of this or the one without the magnifying glass.
