Review

Los Angeles interior designer Mark Lewison wants to help you transform that outdated bedroom, poorly functioning office space or embarrassing guestroom. The designer's new book, "What Would You Do With This Room? My 10 Foolproof Commandments to Great Interior Design" offers 10 easy design commandments, guidelines for creative design, as well as a "Dear Mark" section with real-world examples. Lewison's mantra? "Keep it simple, keep it simple, keep it simple." --California Home + Design Magazine "Daily Find", December 15, 2008

From the Author

"Almost every week, someone asks me what I would do to turn a problem room into a beautiful space, a sanctuary," says Lewison. "Over the years, I've honed my approach to ten basic commandments. This book shows people with little or no design experience how to infuse their own personality into their home to create comfortable and distinctive living spaces."

--Mark Lewison

I decided to splurge on this in the kindle edition, $2.99, not much to risk if I do not like it and I have found that often you do not get much when you buy a digital book for only a few dollars. Well, not the case with this one. I started out with the intent of just skimming it to see what it had to offer, but soon found myself reading from page to page. That is saying quite a bit as I am more of a skim and read here and there type person, yet this book had caught my attention enough to keep me on each and every page. The 10 commandments are simple, yet very helpful suggestions that you can use to take your ordinary room and turn it into spectacular with just a few changes. I love the "use your eyeliner:" suggestion. I new there was some reason I had those black pillows on my couch. It also contains a very helpful real life suggestion section in which readers ask questions providing a room photo and he gives suggestions from his 10 commandments to take the room from almost there to that actual designer look. The best part for me though is how he deals with the reality of daily life, I will be putting a small semi closed desk by my front door and maybe a few hooks on the wall or a bowl for keys as he is right if we tend to accumulate clutter by the door (and who doesn't), then we should design with that in mind. I have learned all this and have not read the book from cover to cover yet. But, this is one book that I will read, from cover to cover. Buy this one, you will not be sorry.

This is not a lengthy book; it is not filled with glossy photos. If you want a coffee table book, go elsewhere. If you want to understand the basic principles of interior design, BUY THIS BOOK. My copy is filled with yellow highlighter markings, and I am so glad I bought it as a reference. In plain, simple language the author explains how to look at your home, what materials to consider and why, and gives invaluable hints and tips on paint, color, proportion, etc. The author's first--and most important--principle is to design/decorate for HOW YOU LIVE. We all want to live in a perfectly decorated showplace, but very few of us actually live that lifestyle. After reading the first chapter, I sat down and composed a list of what I expect of my environment and how the design of my house needs to service that. In other words, don't use Scalamandre silk on the sofa in the TV room if you have kids and dogs. Don't try to make your room look like a furniture showroom by removing the TV if you're a CNN junkie. This sounds simplistic, but this basic principle is at the very center of how you will decorate your home.

I found this to be an invaluable grounding in the principlaes of design. It is clearly stated, practical, and well worth the price.

I bought this book because I'm currently re-entering the interior design world after 13 years of climbing the wrong ladder. This book is very informative and its a good refresher course. The ideas within got my design juices flowing again.

This book is really easy to read and easy to implement.

Interior design used to seem really overwhelming to me. Now I feel like I can manage it better.

Great guide for the novice designer and I think this is a great reference even if you have more experience.

The cover is great in person. Can't wait to gift it to some of my friends.

This book is a charming, irreverent primer for the new, (and not so new), DIY home decorator. Lewison's 10 Commandments from "Design for how you live," to "Don't forget your eyeliner!" will pave the way for just about anyone to create a better home.

My favorite part is the section entitled "Dear Mark... What would you do with this room?" Real people have sent in photos of real problem rooms and ask for advice. From "Holy CLUTTER! What's going on in here?" to "VOILA! All of your dark upholstered furniture is now a lofty looking off white!" Lewison imparts his tricks of the trade in lively, encouraging prescriptions.

Because remember:"The bottom line is that you want to look good in your own home."

Interior Design is an art-form unto itself and this book takes the key principles that designers already know and applies them in ways that ANYONE can understand. Get this book and you will be able to start making improvements that you, previously, never thought possible. What Would You Do With This Room? is the next best thing to hiring an interior designer.....for a lot less! Highly recommended.
