49 people of faith tell their stories,
By Helen R. Early (Lansdale, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: From Wounded Hearts: Faith Stories of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered People and Those Who Love Them (Paperback)
Each chapter in this book is written by a homosexual or transgendered person trying to reconcile their orientation with their religious faith, Chapters in the second part are written by family. Most are signed. In some cases a story in the first part is followed by a parent's story in the "Those Who Love Them" second part; or in one case by a daughter's story in the second part. I found a deeper understanding in reading it, the book was hard to put down. I started to skim it choosing from chapter titles such as "Coloring Outside the Lines", "At Least I'm Not Dying" and "Born Again--Again!" In the end I read it all, and some stories more than once, particularly the one by a transgendered woman who wrote of trying to date girls knowing it was expected, but "It's hard to be a really good date when you are more interested in where the woman got her dress than what is under it."People of all beliefs and orientations will find it moving.

This review is from: From Wounded Hearts: Faith Stories of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered People and Those Who Love Them (Paperback)
A Wonderful Book! For gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgender readers it will show how others came to terms with their faith. For the rest, it gives insight into GLBT lives and shows how important it is that homophobia is removed from religious institutions.

Words that Speak Personally,
By Lou Anne Smoot (Tyler, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: From Wounded Hearts: Faith Stories of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered People and Those Who Love Them (Paperback)
My copy arrived only yesterday, and I continue to have a difficult time putting the book down long enough to do tasks around my apartment that need to be done. Each story has something in it that has me saying, "Yes, that's exactly what I felt," or "I went through that problem" or "I questioned God's love for me in the same way." The stories are short and to the point--and each author speaks from the heart. The experiences shared by lesbians and gays in their "coming out" experiences, especially in relation to reconciling their Christianity with their homosexuality, will be familiar words to all of us who have lived through this difficult time. I am so excited about this book that even though I am less than halfway through reading it, I plan to order a second copy to share with a friend! This is a must-read book!

This review is from: From Wounded Hearts: Faith Stories of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered People and Those Who Love Them (Paperback)
For years the church and society have been telling stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people and making them fit the old sterotypes. These people have been judged without hearing their stories. This book attempts to counteract this imbalance of justice by providing a forum for LGBT people and their families to tell their faith stories.
