There are many excellent Eastern Orthodox spiritual books out there. What sets this book apart I think is that Elder Porphyrios is a modern day Father (died in 1991) that understands and explains some of the problems of our age--why so many are sick and suffering (and how to prayerfully manage illness), why so many children are in crisis with drugs and disobeying parents, how to respond to difficult people, etc. In a world that is often hostile and selfish, his message of love and prayer is like a soothing balm for the hurting soul. He explains how to come closer to God, and his method isn't one of force, but one of gentleness. Instead of just telling us what we "need" to do as Orthodox Christians, he also illustrates how to do it, which is helpful.

In addition to Elder Porphyrios' counsels, the book is also a story of the Elder's life which is inspiring in itself...a man filled with self-sacrifice, love for God, love and service towards his fellow man, and patient endurance of excruciatingly painful illnesses. Through it all, his peace, love, and joy shine through.

The book moved me in so many ways, it was so much more than I expected it to be; I really can't recommend it highly enough (I hope it will become more widely available in the near future, as it can be a bit hard to find right now in 2010).

There are very few modern biographies which are true Mind-Melters.
This is one of them.

Read what the other Amazon Reviewers are saying about this book. Virtually 100% of all of them give it 5 Stars.
And they keep saying the same things: "Wow!" "Incredible!' And, "I was moved to tears."

The only thing I can add is, this would be a perfect gift to give to your Evangelical Protestant and Roman Catholic friends, especially those from the Charismatic Renewal, who want to learn more about the Eastern Orthodox Church. (They will appreciate the miracles and Gifts of the Holy Spirit, such as "Clearsight").

This is the autobiography of a monk and priest from the last century, who, as a boy, had an insatiable desire and drive to become part of the monastic sainthood of the holy mountains of Greece. He tells of running away from home, traveling by boat to the holy mountains, and living with the elders there until he was old enough to become tonsured as a monk, living his childhood and adult life completely wrapped up in holy spirituality. This book is absolutely beautiful and totally absorbing. It is written with such innocence, frankness and honesty in style that you feel like the monk is talking directly to you. He led a most remarkable life of adventure, exhilaration, joy, happiness, spirituality and devotion, rarely seen or understood by modern religious people, or even secular for that matter. The level of the English language used is absolutely superb. A part of the book contains the Elder's thoughts about certain topics of Theology, which is stunningly deep, inspirational, beautiful and perceptive, with practical advice on how to deepen our spiritual growth, especially our prayer life and loving other people. An indispensable 'must-read', not only for its spiritual quality and content, but for its account of life-adventure and counterculture perspective in a very constructive, productive and positive manner. I give it an A_+++.

I am currently very ill and have been for at least 13 years. This book was recommended to me as I grow worse. Elder Porphyious' history and accumulated wisdom in some ways reflects most of us in that it begins with youth, energy, idealism, and not letting anything stop us. Then, in his young adult years he began being afflicted by various diseases which he never recovered from completely and new ones were added as time went on. Then he grew old and died. That is all of us. His idealism and devotion for God are not as most of us, however, he left an example to follow. His love for God and everyone else kept him going, striving and always overcoming.

Almost every page in the first part were accompanied with tears, memories, prayer and hope. His example and counsels have much to offer the hurting when the medical community does not suffice - especially those of us who have given most of our lives to God and then find ourselves in a body foreign to us and we have to learn to live the Orthodox Christian life all over again, perhaps from scratch.

How much this book offers to all strugglers in the faith and all those who discover themselves in unexpected and long-lasting trials. I thank God for this saint and those who recorded his life and wisdom.
