Originally released in 1997, Wounded was the second album from California-based progressive rockers Enchant. I discovered Enchant with their 2000 release Juggling 9 or Dropping 10 and was very impressed by the band's warm, energetic and highly melodic spin on the traditional progressive rock sound. They're still drawing from Yes and Kansas, but there's also a Rush and later era Marillion vibe as well.

I don't get quite the same enjoyment out of Wounded as I do the band's later albums. It seems like they were still discovering their sound and were relying more on prog rock traditions. It's hard to describe, but it seems like they were trying hard to be progressive here, as opposed to later albums where everything seems more warm and natural. That probably makes no sense, but if you listen to Wounded and then spin Tug of War you'll see what I mean. This is still an impressive album, especially when you consider just how few bands were willing to sound like Rush and Marillion in an era when grunge and its leftovers still ruled the radio. There are some amazing melodies here as well as some very impressive musicianship and truly moving vocals.

If you're new to Enchant, I think you'd be much better off checking out Blink of an Eye or Tug of War to get a better feel for the band's sound. If you like what you hear (and you're going to), circle back around to earlier works like Wounded.

Edition Notes: InsideOut reissued Wounded as a Special Edition in 2004.

Both these albums are worth purchasing. Wounded is heavy and just damn good. I recently purchased the DVD and found that the band did Under the Sun from Time Lost- awesome song. Time Lost is a great cd full of leftover tracks. Foundations is another wonderful spine tingling tune. The "Time Lost" complaining about this band Pebozo when you should just be listening to this great band. Wake up ignoramous!!!!!!

This is a nice addition to any prog rock library. The fact that you get two great releases together is just icing on the cake.Highly recommended.
