Striking out for the wilds of Montana, Zack resolves to live as a hermit in Alder Gulch. On one hundred acres in the shadows of the Rockies, he can build a cabin and raise sheep the promise of a better life, free from the entanglements of other people. But Zack can't seem to keep them away from his door. Yet how can he take on these unwelcome people? But if he doesn't provide for them, who will? Book 10 in The House of Winslow.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not So Gripping, February 20, 2009
By
This story follows Zack Winslow, who is a cousin of the Winslow's in the previous books. He fought in the Civil War on the side of the Union, but is sent home after being injured twice. When he returns to his hometown he discovers that his so called best friend has not only sold the business that they owned together but has run off with his fiancée.

He feels like luck has not gone his way so he buys a piece of land in Montana, where he says he is going to live as a hermit. He gets to Montana and builds a home on his property and soon starts to have visitors. They aren't visitors that come and go. They come by and decide to stay. He feels a responsibility for them and doesn't have the heart to turn them away.

Bronwen Morgan is one of the people that shows up at his home. She is a missionary from Wales who has come to the United States to meet her fiancée, so they can get married and start their missionary work. She arrives in the states to some tragic news. What makes her land on Zack's doorstep?

I could not get into this book as much as I have the previous House of Winslow books. For me Zack wanting to become a hermit was a little different. Then I couldn't picture all those people just coming by and staying with him actually happen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book 10 deserves 10 stars!, March 29, 1999
By A Customer
Gilbert Morris always delivers a can't-put-it-down story, but this one really delivers an adventure that is extremely entertaining. I thought it was hilarious how Zacharias decides to become a hermit, but ends up with one baby, one Indian woman, one female missionary, and three orphaned children! How he handles this and stays "sane" makes a good story.
