Book Description

January 18, 2005
Bring depth and spiritual enrichment to your understanding of the passion of Christ with Christina Baxter's The Wounds of Jesus. By examining the passion from the perspective of each of the wounds of Christ, readers gain a more meaningful understanding of the Lord's life and gift of sacrifice, as well as what his suffering means for us today. Each chapter includes a thorough description of one of six divine wounds (back, feet, hands, side, head, and heart) to deepen readers' understanding of the cross. In further exploration, Baxter sets each of the wounds of Jesus in the context of a major theme used by the New Testament to explain the theology of the cross. Practical applications are encouraged through discussion and reflection questions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read for Lent/Eastertide, March 9, 2011

This review is from: The Wounds of Jesus: A Meditation on the Crucified Saviour (Paperback)
Really enjoyed this book and it was easy to follow. Most have seen the crucifix in paintings, books, and even in our places of worship and growing up in the Bible Stories. The Bible is the best source to get the true meaning. This book brought it into a deeper understanding of the sacrifices he made for each of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars A useful book for Lent, March 26, 2007
This review is from: The Wounds of Jesus: A Meditation on the Crucified Saviour (Paperback)
This book, the Archbishop of Canterbury's Lent Book for 2005, is divided into chapters which focus on the wounds of Jesus - back, feet, hands, side, head and heart - and each chapter can be broken down into smaller sections to work through over Lent.

Canon Dr Christina Baxter weaves prayers and litanies throughout the book to focus the mind of the reader and to encourage meditation on the themes and there are questions and ideas at the end of each chapter for group or individual study. The chapters look at the historical background to the world in which Jesus lived - for example, the chapter on feet discusses foot washing and what it meant in Jesus' time.

But the book is not purely a historical discussion of the agonies Jesus suffered, it also encourages the reader to consider what they can do in the modern world to carry out Jesus' commission to live as a true follower of Christ, to truly carry their own cross. An excellently-written book which is thought-provoking and challenging.
