5.0 out of 5 stars Great sampler of a wide range of popular Christian music.
I have bought WOW compilations since 1996. I think each has been better than the preceding. WOW 1997 is great. I have purchased individual artists' CDs after getting to know them here. What I especially like about these compilations is that the mix is varied so that it stands up to repeated listening, as sometimes is NOT the case with a recording by a single group (DC...

What I especially like about these compilations is that the mix is varied so that it stands up to repeated listening, as sometimes is NOT the case with a recording by a single group (DC Talk's Jesus Freak and Supernatural being exceptions). I look forward to many many WOWs in the future.

WoW 97 is just as good as WoW 96. Had songs by some old favorites (among them Becker and Watson) and introduced me to some great new ones I'd never heard of before (being from the R.P.) Discovered dc Talk and the Newsboys through these albums. BUY IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Made me want to buy more WOW albums!, July 16, 1998

This was my first Christian music album. I wasn't sure if there would be any good "Christian" songs. I'm really glad I bought it. I ran out & bought WoW 1998 right after & will get WoW 1996 soon. I switch off between them & have listened to nothing but for days. There's so many songs to listen to without getting bored. Based on these albums I think I might actually invest in a whole CD by one artist... probably the Newsboys. Try it! I'm glad I did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to God-inspired artists, December 15, 2008
This review is from: Wow 1997: The Year's 30 Top Christian Artists & Songs [ECD] (Audio CD)
This album is a good springboard for those who are not familiar with Christian artists. While I didn't like every song on the album, that's to be expected with a compilation containing 30 tracks.

WOW 1997 introduced me to two of contemporary Christian music's brightest stars: Steven Curtis Chapman and Twila Paris. I had heard of their names, but was deprived of their soul-uplifting music. After listening to WOW 1997, I bought Chapman's Signs of Life and Paris' Where I Stand, both of which are stand-out efforts.

Other highlights from WOW 1997 are Cece Winans' R&B-tinged tune, "Every Time" as well as the cool groove of "Under the Influence" by Anointed. Bryan Duncan's ballad to Jesus, "After This Day is Gone" shines, while Margaret Becker's "True Devotion" bounces along nicely. Of course, there's also the modern classic "Between You and Me" by DC Talk, which led many to buy the Jesus Freak album.

Some songs are a bit hard rock for my taste, while others are sung by vocalists that just don't seem to hit the right notes. But it's the message of love and faith in Christ that shines through in this album.

Recommended...especially as a sampler of Christian artists.

WOW 1997 is a two-CD, 30-song compilation of the best contemporary Christian music for 1996 (yes, I know...... the year says 1997, but it was actually released at the end of 1996....... go figure!).

From Steven Curtis Chapman's "Lord Of The Dance" to Newsboys' "Take Me To Your Leader" to Petra's "Right Place" to Margaret Becker's "True Devotion," this best-of-the-year album has something for just about everyone to enjoy.

Too expensive to buy each artist's album to get all of these great songs? Then add this compilation CD to your collection and enjoy these great songs anytime.
