Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1—It's Izzy's first day of school and her excitement can be felt in exuberant illustrations and exclamations of "Wow! Classroom!," "Wow! Teacher!," etc. Bright, busy oversized spreads paired with simple patterned text make this an appealing look at a new experience. Children may need some time to take in everything happening in the bustling pages, but they will enjoy picking out familiar objects and activities as they follow Izzy through her day. Sharp-eyed youngsters will spot copies of No, David! and Madeline in the illustration accompanying "Wow! Books!," and some may even spot the author's own Wow! City! on the first spread. The bold, crayonlike lines of Neubecker's India-ink drawings contrast pleasingly with the computer-generated color. This is a wonderful book for sharing with groups of emergent readers, who will enjoy chiming along, and it is well suited to the attention spans of children just beginning preschool or kindergarten.—Neala Arnold, St. Francis Elementary School, MN

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Neubecker has used the big, bold Wow! format in two previous books—Wow! City! (2004) and Wow! America! (2006)—but it works especially well here as school comes wildly and wonderfully alive. A brief setup introduces Izzy, who lives on a mountain. The school bus takes her into a new world of books, art, music, and students. Kids will be mesmerized by each big two-page spread, made seemingly larger by the neon-bright illustrations, brimming with stuff to look at and emphasized with plenty of india ink lines. The first spread, "Wow! Classroom!" is a pulsating mélange of coats, cubbies, beads, blocks, books, paints, pets, and busy children everywhere. There's so much to see that some youngsters might be overwhelmed, but a knowing adult can help focus attention; there are all sorts of games to be invented—from picking out Izzy Where's Waldo-style to counting and alphabet games. Once the book is closed, children might say, "Whew," but that will surely be followed by, "Wow!" Cooper, Ilene --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!!! December 30, 2007
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
My daughter who is 2 1/2 loves to read this over and over again. There is so much going on in the pictures that new stories can be told, so it's never the same book twice.

My brother gave this book to my son as a 2nd birthday present. At first I wasn't sure about it since there are no words (or rather very few), just pictures.
However, as I started looking through the pages I realized that the images are intertwined in a way where a story can be made up by the "reader" on the fly.
The characters and objects in each page (all having to do with a preschool environment and activities) are present throughout the book. My son loves it when I ask him questions about a character such as: Where is Izzi (the lead charater) in this page?, What is she doing?, What color is her shirt?, etc.
There is also a dog which is featured in all the pages (in some cases very small) and he loves to look for it among the other images.
The real testament to the greatness of this book is the fact that my son wants me to read it everyday (even after 6 months!). Needless to say I read him other books, but there isn't a night when he doesn't ask for the "school book".
In short, I think this is a great book and would recommend it to any parent who has a toddler. It is a great way to teach them about shapes, colors, the alphabet, numbers, animals, the planets, and the list goes on.
Next I will buy him the "Wow! City! (Ala Notable Children's Books. Younger Readers (Awards))" book.

This book was just like WOW CITY! and my kids loved finding Izzy and her dog on every page. Colorful and educational. Easy reading but fun for both my 2 and 4 year old.
