Book Description

Freak. Weird. Crazy. These are the names tossed around seventeen-year old Jane Watts by her fellow classmates. But things aren’t always as they seem. Sometimes there’s a reason for talking to yourself in the hallway at school.

Jane struggles with adjusting to her new home and school after an abrupt move. She wants one thing in life—to be like everyone else at school, but that’s hard to do when you’re the new kid. But she does manage to make one friend, Evan—he’s sixteen, charming, and protective. Everything a girl could want in a best friend…with one minor caveat.

He's dead.

Caught somewhere between life and death, Evan is tied to Jane and the living world unable to complete the journey to the other side. She thinks he’s here to be her friend, to take care of her, and that’s why no one can see or hear him.

That is until a new boy shows up at school after a rumored stretch in Juvie. Connor can see Evan and he’s not convinced the ghost is being completely honest. From his own experience ghosts tend to need something from the humans they connect to and Evan, despite his arguments isn’t any different.

Jane is resentful of Connor’s intrusion but realizes soon enough he’s right. Evan has secrets about his past and not only did his life end tragically but members of his family are still in danger. Jane must face her fears and battle Evan’s human demons to free both of them.

Book 2 of the Wraith Series, Shadow Bound will be released in December 2012.

5.0 out of 5 stars a ghostly stream of teenaged consciousness February 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
What I love most about this book is the internal dialogue of the main character, Jane. She's funny, snarky and observant, and her reactions to the world that spins around her are honest and true to a teenager battling over-concerned parents, a phantom best friend, and the handsome high school troublemaker.
We know from the start that Evan isn't your ordinary spectre. He can manipulate objects, including Jane's hair, which he pulls in class, causing attention she doesn't want. He's also very tight-lipped about his past.
Connor doesn't want to talk about his past, either. He wants to talk about Evan, and although Jane doesn't trust him, she's fascinated by him, and thrown off-kilter by his interest.
(And the chemistry between the two is utterly delicious!)
I'm hoping a sequel is in the works; Jane's inner voice is so fresh and real, I want to read more!

3.0 out of 5 stars It was kind of...awkward. December 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It was okay. I think my biggest issue with this book was the way it made me feel uncomfortable. The narration (voice) and the dialogue and the actions, especially of the main character made me think that the main character, Jane, was more like 13 or 14 years old (maybe even younger), rather than seventeen years old.

The story line was alright but not really original. It felt like the two main characters in this book were a little uncomfortable in their own skin. Then starts the inappropriate sexual remarks and gestures. Again, I felt like, based on the dialogue between the characters and the narrative voice that the characters were much younger than state, that was the feel of the writing for me. Either way, he might be eighteen (I don't think miss Lawson really stated whether he was or not, and she is seventeen). It was a little weird at times.

As far as the story goes, it wasn't great. I feel like the story missed out on a lot of potential if it would have been thought out a little more. And the love story felt like something that was happening on the side, and then you get smacked in the face with it and suddenly everything is accepted. Again, it was a little weird.

This book will pass the time for you if you are desperate, and the price is right. I would have been just fine putting it down and never picking it up again. I have a rule, though, and I started it so I had to read it.

I never really understood the title of the book. It doesn't really go along with the story theme. I think that the actual word "wraith" was mentioned maybe twice, fleetingly. "Wraith" doesn't really have much to do with this story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome YA Paranormal Romance June 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Wraith is a stellar first YA paranormal romance. The protags are believable teens, both living and dead. The abilities that Jane and Connor have are reminiscent of the little hero in "The Sixth Sense." What I appreciated most about this book is Jane's sometimes prickly personality. It's more realistic than having her fawning over Connor from day one. In real life relationships grow over time as someone earns your trust. I think this was portrayed beautifully in Wraith while giving us a plot that was believable and fraught with the conflicts that make works of fiction a great read. Ms. Lawson was able to do with her first published serial work something that will keep me coming back again. She ended it in a place that is satisfying enough that the book stands alone. Cliffhangers are great from chapter to chapter, but when one has to wait a year or more to learn the fate of a beloved character, it can be frustrating. Wraith as drawn me in enough to want to follow Jane and Connor for some time to come. This is a must read for fans of paranormal YA!

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Main Man but Story Missing a Soul March 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Every so often I finish a book and the last thing I want to do is type up a review. In most cases this feeling is brought on by an extremely mediocre title, a Goldilocks title if you will. Having been not too good and not too bad, 'Wraith' by Angel Lawson falls right onto that fine line and doesn't really give me much to talk about. That said, I'd be shirking my reviewer responsibilities if I left it there, so let's forge on, shall we?

The Good: The love interest, Connor, of our protagonist Jane is one of the better drawn characters of his type in the genre. Believable, well rounded and surprisingly interesting, this character carries most of the story on his shoulders and keeps it moving at a nice, page-turning clip.

The Bad: The adults in this story are, for the most part, unbelievably stupid, one-dimensional and irrelevant. The one exception here is Jane's aunt and that's only because that particular adult was an obvious introspective mirror for Jane's character.

The Bottom Line: This title would be great for a much younger reader just getting their bearings on the YA genre. As for the rest of us hardened veterans... well, it might be worth the time if you're not too concerned about some of the characters making rationale, motivated choices but love a good bad boy romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent YA March 22, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Wraith was written in a clear, concise way; I appreciate this. No superfluous language, yet at the same time there was nothing simplistic about it. Believable dialogue and interactions. Despite the fact she sometimes frustrated me, i had such a soft spot for Jane... and I found Conner to be rather irresistible. Evan remained ghostly in both truth and his character status: he played such a huge part in the plot but wasn't always around. especially liked the way the writer fleshed out some of the other characters, like Ava. As secondaries, they never took over, but they weren't random either. She helped Jane come in to her own, right along with Conner.

The general arc of the story is somewhat traditional, but told with a fresh voice. i liked the inclusion of art; particularly graffiti and tagging, and especially the way this made an appearance at the very end.

I was surprised at how attached I got to these characters: mainly Jane and Evan. I wanted them to "win", to succeed. The way this was written, I could see another story following, and it would feel organic, not like an expected sequel

A very easy to read novel and many of the twists are hard to see...although just a teen book, the subject matter is very real.
