Wraths of Time, while short, has to be one of the most epic, skull crushing Swedish Black/Death releases of all time, and most have never heard it. Hidden in the shadow of countrymen Dissection, this was not taken all that seriously, which is a shame as it stands on its own as one of the best, and definitely Swordmasters pinnacle. The title track is brutal whiplashing fury incarnate, inciting berserk head-banging mania. "Upon Blood & Ashes" opens with Hellhammer riffing that gives way to glorious melancholy, carrying the listener to the glittering frost covered peaks of the Kjolen mountains before descending into blistering madness.
Swordmaster would go on to more thrash/death metal territory, but this debut EP is their blackened best. Some may claim it is derivative of Dissection [Emil is the younger brother of Jon Nodtveidt] and that may be the reason that they turned away from the black metal sound, but I think they achieved something with this release that stood out, and still love it despite not being a fan of black metal generally. Check it out, especially at the 3.99 it costs to download.
