I purchased this book because I have the book Hellbeasts by the artist James Pavelec. I was thoroughly impressed with the explanations and the artwork in Mr. Pavelec's first book. When I received Wreaking Havoc I was equally as impressed and pleased with this new book. Mr. Pavelec and the 3 other artists did a fantastic job explaining their craft. I was very interested to compare their unique styles and techniques. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to create excellent quality fantasy artwork.

This book is fantastic. The images in this book are so facinating and bold. My 12 year old daughter picked this book up a couple weeks ago and has not let it down since. She is an avid young artist and is very good at drawing but this book moved her beyond good to amazing. She has not stopped drawing for weeks now and every day she improves, using the techniqes and styles in this book. The artists that worked to create this masterpiece have got to be some of the most talented and gifted artists I have seen in a long time. I hope they make many more to come and so does my daughter.

I was a bit disappointed after reading the good reviews. I guess I expected more, but the company, Impact, seems to target the very, very inexperiences artists. They really don't give a whole lot of detail and don't emphasize enough on the different types of weapons and armor or the archetypal beings. They don't really emphasize much on anatomy either. Now the only Impact book series that I would really recommend are the ones with the stock photos in them. Gives a lot of ideas on poses and such (which I really struggle on for some reason).
I mean, a step-by-step book is not a good teaching tool at all when it comes to art. Art is about practice, not tracing or copying. Copying teaches nothing, repetition does (and there is a MAJOR difference between the two). A book that an aspiring artist really needs to get when looking to improve technique or form is an anatomy book. I've found that an anatomy book taught me most because I kept my own style, but improved on it through good references of different body parts such as the arm and chest area. Tips help massively too in those types of books. Actually, a book I recommend for both beginners and experts alike is Christopher Hart's "Simplified Anatomy for the Comic Book Artist". He really knows how to explain muscles in terminology that everyone can understand and he gives comparison pictures between the old style and new style of comics. He also gives a lot of references on the different types of major muscles and has a whole section devoted to each. Even if you're not a comic book artist, his book is definitely worth a look at if you're more into cartooning types of art styles than realism.

Wreaking Havoc does just that!,
This review is from: Wreaking Havoc: How To Create Fantasy Warriors And Wicked Weapons (Paperback)
I bought this book, Wreaking Havoc, for my precocious 13yr old son for Christmas. He loves to draw and play fantasy games. I'm always trying to find ways to channel his energy!. Well this book captivated him and sparked a real desire to not only draw but to learn more about what it means to be an artist. I decided to read this book myself and was delighted to find 4 talented guys,(sorry to read one had passed away in the process) who seem passionate about teaching others about their work. It's full of useful infomation about "real" art supplies to use and painting techniques. We both enjoyed the introductions and famous quotes and of course the crazy characters. It has helped my son discover a path to his creativity. He's hooked. Thanks"

The art is not really good enough,

The artist that are in this book are the worst artist that I have ever seen published in a long time. I would not suggest to any of my friends to purchase this book thats how bad the art is in it. The artist may be better suited at being 3d computer animated artist but their fantasy art styles do not please me at all as far as penciling, painting, and airbrushing is concerned. My review of this book is a "C" just for the effort that they had to put into this fantasy book.
