5.0 out of 5 stars A revelation, July 31, 2006

This review is from: The Wreck of the Cassandra (Hardcover)
My favorite Prokosch novel. This is a really powerful story full of wordly wisdom on every page. It's a compelling tale, realistic & poetic at the same time, about 9 survivors of a shipping-disaster who finally enter into extremely profound experiences. Highly recommended especially if you like THE ASIATICS or THE SEVEN WHO FLED.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poetic novel, August 28, 2005

Bomojaz (South Central PA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Wreck of the Cassandra (Hardcover)
A group of upper crust passengers on a rundown ship in the South are shipwrecked on an island after the ship catches fire. They journey across the island through jungle, arrive at a village (where one, Miss Eccles, is thought a goddess, but is made a prisoner and has her fingers ritually chopped off after she "fails the test"), talk a lot, and get rescued at the end. It's set in 1938, and I thought it might have been an allegory about everyone getting along with one another and how uncivilized the world is - but it's hard to tell. Prokosch, who was also a poet, writes in a sensitive, poetic manner.
