5.0 out of 5 stars Not my typical cup of tea..., October 8, 2009
This review is from: Wreck N Sow (Audio CD)
I found these guys by accident in the early days of [...] before this album even had eight songs on it... and bought it then. I've always been a fan of indie artists. Not so much indie as in weird, but indie as in an artist or band who simply is passionate about music to the point that their very soul would cease to live on without it. Indie, as in "doin' it on our own terms", regardless of cd sales. Just for the love of it. Here are a couple of guys travelling around a local circuit near their home in California (though I wish they'd come to Nashville), taking life slow, and telling stories. Stories of life, love, and well, a fictional mentally challeged older brother who goes to visit his mother in prison... okay, maybe a little weird. Stories of slowing down and taking in those really great moments, then following them with dreams of escaping daily monotony to run off on an adventure... then longing for home. From chilhood to sagehood, lovers and lovers lost, groovin' to grieving, the words and melodies captured in these songs could easily find themselves in a soundtrack to one of those movies reminiscent of a time when life existed in the simple purity of small dusty town, filled with wide open spaces, where there lived not one stranger, and everyone was family.
So coming from a guy whose music collection is spattered with everything from jazz to heavy metal, for this little peice of front-porch americana to find itself identifying with my own experiences, and even leaving me looking forward to more, is pretty remarkable. This is the only record of its type that I have, and I don't know why it struck such a chord with me, but I'd buy it again just to have two... oh wait, I did! After my now wife heard it she wanted one for her to carry in her car! We even used "Before Today" as our wedding song! If you're not convinced, let me just add that every song is ten times better when heard in full length, and in these lyrics you will soon find yourself lost in places you'll be wanting to come back to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars All over the place in a good way, October 18, 2004
This review is from: Wreck N Sow (Audio CD)
This album makes me smile and want to travel(high school town) and cry (barrel of rain) and catch Berkley Hart every time I can. The percussionist also plays with Joel Raphael band and I highly recommend Woodeye, a tribute to Woody Guthrie if you like folk. BH's voices are warm and charming and there's enough variety here to hold your interest.
