First full-length album by the band shows promise
Like the name of this band, this album is melancholy and sullen. The outstanding track is "Your Maps." The band recalls the spirit of REM, the Cure, and the Smiths and fuses those 80s sounds with introspective lyrics displaying a pessimism that is shared by any other caring human.

Never has the cover of a rock album more perfectly depicted the sounds featured on the inside. The picture shows the countryside on a rainy late fall afternoon, the type of which would perfectly suit your mood if you've just lost the love of your life or if you despair of ever finding one. "Wreck at Pillar Point" establishes its gloomy mood right away and doesn't let up for the length of its dozen tracks. Lead singer Matt Gallaway's voice is the perfect accompaniment for the songs with its pleading wistfulness. And the songwriting is absolutely first rate. The best cuts are "Summer was a Waste" (which evokes R.E.M.'s "Camera"), "Slightly Less Than Even," "Tell Me Lies Later," "Had Enough" and "Mavericks," though picking the best is difficult when the whole album maintains a uniform excellence. Despite the downcast mood, it maintains a high level of rock energy throughout. If you're feeling low, or you love hearing what feeling low sounds like, this is your album.

Dream-rock band co mes into its own., March 1, 1999

I've seen this band play live, and they melt the walls! This album signals a shift from their Galaxy 500 roots, and really establishes their own dream-rock sound of contemplative melancholia. But don't let the name fool you. Playful riffs interspersed throughout the songs help bring up the mood, while the strong lyrics from indie-legend Matt Gallaway have a mesmerizing quality. This is my favorite music to drive to because the songs are relentless and keep pushing you forward.
