5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Guide To Sharpen Technique, April 28, 2006
By
This review is from: The Wrestling Drill Book (The Drill Book Series) (Paperback)
"The Wrestling Drill Book" is a comprehensive guide for wrestlers at the youth and high school levels. The guide is easy-to-follow, with excellent photo diagrams explaining moves, positions and drills. For those of us who believe 'visualization' is a crucial aspect of wrestling, you couldn't have a better book to read and review.

5.0 out of 5 stars THis Wrestling Book All Coaches Must Have, April 4, 2006
This review is from: The Wrestling Drill Book (The Drill Book Series) (Paperback)
Book Review: The Wrestling Drill Book (Bill Welker, Editor)
by Tom Elling - Pennsylvania Wrestling Website
www.pawrsl.com/pa/tebull.htm)

All wrestling coaches and school libraries will want this
instructional wrestling book added to their collections.

Bill Welker, a former Pennsylvania State Champion and more recently the head wrestling official in West Virginia, is the editor and he has enlisted a virtual Who's Who in the wrestling world to explain and illustrate (the book has hundreds of outstaning photos) the basics of wrestling and the most effective drills. Outstanding coaches and wrestlers such as Ed Peery, Craig Turnbull, Pat Pecora, and others give it to you straight, benefitting coaches at all levels. It breaks down drills for movement , Takedowns, Escapes and Reversals, Riding to Pinning, Advanced Pinning, Conditioning, and methods for running Effective Practices.

For the new coach looking for direction to those who just need a refresher or something different to add to their lesson plans, this book is one you must have.

Bobby Douglas, the highly-successful wrestler and recent head coach at Iowa State, provides a very comprehensive foreword. If someone as successful as Mr. Douglas recommends the book, then you know it has substance.

I, too, rate this book at a must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hip Position Emphasis of Maximum Importance, March 20, 2006
This review is from: The Wrestling Drill Book (The Drill Book Series) (Paperback)
This is a no nonsense book that starts with essential movement skills. Throughout the book, it not only points out the importance and power of constant drill work to promote "move" perfection, but demonstrates the significance of "hip position" in all facets of folkstyle wrestling. A great resource that validates what successful coaches have been doing for years to produce championship wrestlers and teams. It is filled with drills, conditioning activities, and off-season endeavors that will put the serious wrestler on the champions podium. Coaches of all levels could benefit from what The Wrestling Drill Book has to offer. As a coach's wife with a deep understanding of wrestling, and wrestling mother of champions, I recommend this book for all wrestling emthusiasts.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" Wrestling Book for All Levels of Skill, May 12, 2009
This review is from: The Wrestling Drill Book (The Drill Book Series) (Paperback)
The Wrestling Drill Book... by Dr. Bill Welker, is an excellent teaching tool for wrestling coaches and wrestlers of all levels. The step-by-step technical lessons and especially the "move" illustrations are very well done. Also integral to the sport of wrestling is weight training and conditioning, and both are well represented in this book! Dr. Welker's background is second to none. As a former Pennsylvania State Wrestling Champion and collegiate wrestler at Pitt... Dr. Welker has dedicated his life to teaching and wrestling, and his vast experience shows in his book. I really like the way Dr. Welker breaks down the moves and drills, both on the mat and in the weight room. The Wrestling Drill Book is a great resource for all who love the sport of wrestling. Buy it!

We ordered this book for our school library. From the day it arrived, it has been checked out and being read. We knew the wrestling team would read it but it has been popular with many of the non-wrestlers, too. It's nice to see kids staying in shape.

Dr. Bill Welker has put together a great resource in "The Wrestling Drill Book." This would be the perfect gift for any rookie coach, and a valued resource for coaches of any experience level. Any coach or wrestler will find drills and suggestions in this book that they will benefit from. The sequential photos and sequence of "Setup," "Action," and "Coaching Point" makes it a practical and easy to follow tool.

My son is in his 3rd year of wrestling, and my husband helps coach him and some other boys in the program (they are part of AAU youth wrestling). They both have gotten a lot out of this book that neither one really "got" at practice. There have been a lot of "oh...so that's why that move hasn't worked for me" stuff like that. Great book, glad we got it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Drill Book for In-Season and Off-Season Wrestling Perfection of Moves!, April 30, 2007
This review is from: The Wrestling Drill Book (The Drill Book Series) (Paperback)
As the editor and author of "The Wrestling Drill Book," I first want to thank the wrestling community throughout the country for nationwide acceptance of the book. It's a no nonsense, "cut to the chase" book that emphasizes the importance of drill work and perfecting wrestling moves in the neutral, bottom, and top positions. The book fundamentally teaches the science of "memorization," physical memorization of move development in the mat sport.
One hall of fame coach put it bluntly, "If I have to yell at you what to do, it's probably too late. A wrestler must react to situations, not think and then react. The Wrestling Drill Book stresses this doctrine, along with the importance of 'hip position' in all areas of the sport."
I, as the editor and author, was very fortunate to secure the expertise of some of the finest "drill work" technicians in the country, with many, many years of coaching success to back their methods of training.
Chapter 7 demonstrates how to incorporate "drill work" into the daily wrestling practice format, and much more. The final segment of the chapter gives the astute coach and dedicated wrestler a solid framework for off-season activities that will complete their development into championship wrestlers.
Finally, I want to share with all wrestling enthusiasts [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!!!, October 3, 2010

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Wrestling Drill Book (The Drill Book Series) (Paperback)
I don't know how long I've been looking for a book of this caliber. Many of the conditioning and drill books I've looked at, and sometimes bought, only offer a segment on the topic and then branch into techniques etc... This IS a DRILL BOOK. Remember the burn, the pain, the sweat, the anxiety, the scent of hunger? That's what this book takes me back to.
