By
This review is from: Wrestling Society X: The Complete First Season (DVD)
GLORIOUS, might even be an understatment...while this little doozy lasted its ten episode run...i was in hardcore wrestling heaven! i couldnt get enough and then it just stoped....after all 9 episodes were played in a row...and we didnt even get to see the pirahna death match...:(...but now with this dvd comeing out everyone can experience the wonderfully violent world of wsx, and i know u will all love jack evans, white trash johnny web, vicious vic grimes, the human tornado, but not matt sydell, who just struck a deal with the wwe in sept 2007. this wsx also boasts some all time favs like x-pac...(now sean waltman),justin credible, and vampiro....trust me u will love this!anyone whos familier with xpw should know alot of the talent in this show...

From The Executive Producer,

This review is from: Wrestling Society X: The Complete First Season (DVD)
I've never had the nerve to actually write a review of my own product...WSX is a first! If you are a fan of wrestling then you may already know that I am the Executive Producer/Co-creator of Wrestling Society X. I also own Big Vision Entertainment.
As many of you know, all of us at BVE pride ourselves on our unique wrestling content. The fact theat we were able to get WSX a shot on a major network was one in a million to begin with. And even though i begged the network not to put us up against ECW...we landed right against the ECW main event every week. On top of that, we were on the network during a huge state of flux. This happens often in the TV industry and there is just nothing you can do about it. One thing I am thankful for is the fact that MTV granted us back the rights to sell the WSX season on DVD. There are so many people who put thier heart and soul into this show. It would take forever to thank all of them...so I will only point out one key player for now. You know him...you love him, Co-Creator Kevin Kleinrock! Kevin lives and breathes wrestling and this show has been his life from the moment it began. For those of you who already saw the series on MTV, you will be so excited to see all the extras you get in this incredible compilation. Everything from the WSXtra episodes to script breakdowns, special videos and a lot more...not to mention the 10th NEVER BEFORE SEEN final episode! It really is a wonderful product. In short, I am extremely proud of WSX and feel that dollar for dollar, this is one of the best wrestling DVD compilations of all time. And the price...is dirt cheap! Enjoy...give us your feedback. Thanks for endulging what is a "very rare" self promotion by reading my post. All the best, Houston Curtis Executive Producer/Co-Creator Wrestling Society X

For Addicts, Not Purists,
By Ed The K Motley (SCOTTSDALE, AZ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wrestling Society X: The Complete First Season (DVD)
When Wrestling Society X started on MTV, I said that I would not watch it on TV but I would buy the DVD. The thought of watching a "season finale," then waiting for the next season to be written, filmed, and produced did not appeal to me.
In truth, this promotion did more to open a new realm of wrestling ("stunt wrestling") than anything in the United States since the original ECW. It purposely went out of its way to defy wrestling convention, and I thought the show was well designed. Unfortunately, its key demographics were a bit thinly stretched, so it did not have an audience to carry its praises. While I am not a fan of ECW or Japanese wrestling, I gave this DVD set a fair shake, and I enjoyed it. After watching Disc 2, I wasted no time putting in Episodes 9 and 10. These shows & matches are devoid of true wrestling, so stop thinking in terms of "babyface" or "heel," and don't expect emotional roller coaster rides. Instead, watch the shows knowing that you'll see crazy & amazing stunts - and many of them. Love WSX or hate them, Billy Club hit the nail on the head in his review, "WSX (had) more of an American Gladiators or Battle Dome feel, rather than a serious wrestling company's show." While WWE and TNA (and their fans) often take wrestling too seriously, Wrestling Society X was a great reminder that the most fun you can have with wrestling is by turning off your brain and just enjoying the excitement!

So Much Potential, So Little Time,
This review is from: Wrestling Society X: The Complete First Season (DVD)
If you have never heard of Wrestling Society X, it is probably because MTV pushed the organization out the door before it used the mat.
Slated for an initial season of 10, thirty-minute episodes, WSX debuted on Tuesday, January 30, 2007, at 10:30 pm and remained in that time slot through February 27 (episodes 1-4). The program was quickly wrapped up after that, with episodes 5-6 airing from 11 pm-midnight on March 13, episodes 7-9 shown from 12 am-1:30 am one day later and the final show for the season was never shown. The four-disc DVD set features all 10 episodes, 10 programs which aired on the MTV website & Video on Demand and special features. The talent was impressive, with the roster including Vampiro, 6-Pac, New Jack, The Disco Machine, Justin Credible, Kaos and Teddy Hart. The fast-paced action, with pinfalls counting anywhere - minus bulky storylines - and special musical guests for each episode was created by Kevin Kleinrock and Houston Curtis. Though developed with a keen interest in the 18-24 demographic, this is superb professional wrestling for fans of any age, especially for those who truly appreciate the old-school approach. The potential was great for Wrestling Society X, but this first - and only - season was one for the ages.

Greatest Wrestling DVD Ever Made!,
By KlownArt (Georgia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wrestling Society X: The Complete First Season (DVD)
I have been a wrestling fan since 1996 and have watched all kinds of wrestling. I have a wrestling DVD/VHS collection spanning over 50 all together. This is the most complete and accurate review of this DVD you will find. I hope you find this review helpful; remember to vote helpful or not helpful. (Note-Each DVD I review has a "Match of the DVD" award somewhere in it.)
Wrestling Society X- The Complete First and Last Season WSX originally aired on MTV on Tuesdays at 10:30 PM, which was right against ECW's second half. The show was only 30 minutes long and was extremely fast paced. This show wasn't just for wrestling fans; it was for fans of good television. It grew a following quickly, but due to turmoil within MTV, it was canceled. The first 9 episodes were shown on MTV at one point or another. Sadly, the final tenth episode was never shown. This DVD finally shows all ten episodes along with their WSXtra shows. This DVD set is a 4-Disk set with over 10 hours of footage, and it is dirt-cheap. WSX is all about wacky storylines and EXPLOSIONS! You'll enjoy every crazy minute of it. I recommend this DVD to anyone that wants to be entertained for a long time. The exterior casing is amazing. The only fault in this product is the internal casing, which has the disks stacked on top of each other. If you are cautious, this should not be a dilemma. Match of the DVD- Team Dragon Gate VS The Filth & The Fury- Exploding Steel Cage Timebomb Deathmatch Disk 1 and Disk 2 contain the first 8 episodes of the Season, with multiple alternate commentaries for each of the episodes. The DVD has a great feature called Marathon Mode in which you can watch a WSX episode followed by it's WSXtra episode. The addition of alternate commentaries will make you watch through the season to hear all the back-stories on certain things. Disk 3 contains the final 2 episodes of WSX, including the final tenth episode that never aired on MTV. The tenth episode is amazing. It includes a Piranha Deathmatch and an Exploding Steel Cage Timebomb Match. Both of which are awesome. Disk 3 also contains extras like deleted scenes and promo reels. Disk 4 is an extras disk that is loaded with great stuff. It contains extra matches including a Cage of Death from CZW, a XPW match, and two women's matches. Some of the matches aren't great, but it's still a really good feature. This disk also has sexy videos of Lizzy Valentine and Lacey. There is also a 10 minute long promo where Fabian Kaelin talks about his transformation in WSX. One really different feature is the script gallery, in which you can view the scripts from the show. The characters for this show are very different and awesome. I want to go through them to give you a better idea about the show. Vampiro (Former WCW Star, very dark and sadistic) Sean "6-Pac" Waltman (Formerly X-Pac, Cocky as hell but backs it up) Ricky Banderas (His face was burned by Vampiro and he's out for revenge, monster) Youth Suicide (Always seems to get beat down) Matt Sydal & Lizzy Valentine (The "perfect" couple...or is it) Jack Evans (Cool guy that is an amazing High flyer) Human Tornado (The P.I.M.P. of WSX, really funny character) Scorpio Sky (Keeps every reward he's ever gotten in life, including ones from 5th grade) Matt Classic (Stuck in the 50's and wrestles that style) Vic Grimes & Nic Grimes (A big fat guy and his girlfriend that wears a mask) Arik Cannon (Anarchist, or he's supposed to be) El Hombre Blanco Enmascarado (White guy in a mask...seriously) The Filth & The Fury (Two of the greatest high fliers) Team Dragon Gate (Insane Japanese Team) Los Pochos Guapes (Kaos and his lazy partner) The Cartel (A Mafia mentality type team) Alkatrazz & Luke Hawx (Guys from prison) D.I.F.H (Doing It For Her, Emo guy meets super serious guy) Trailer Park Boys (The name says it all) That 70's Team (Think Disco Inferno except a tag team) Keepin' It Gangsta (Bling Ladder, that is all) The Broadcast Team: Bret Ernst & Kris Kloss WSXtra Host: Lacey The Most Hated Man In Pro Wrestling: Fabian Kaelin

WSX - great in its own right,
By
This review is from: Wrestling Society X: The Complete First Season (DVD)
WSX is over the top, it's even cheesy at times, but still, it's purely entertaining and innovative in its own right. It has had its great moments and unquestionably some mighty skilled talents between the ropes. It's sad that WWE haven't already recruited some of the guys that showed of some great high-spot wrestling in WSX. At least I have heard that WWE had some tryouts with Matt Sydal, but I can be mistaken.
Long story short, WSX derserves to have its respected place in wrestling history, even if the approach to our beloved sport was a little "different", to say the least. If Vince McMahon would consider to change the current ECW into something fresh (which is essential in my opinion), he should go the WSX-direction, especially in times the amount of so-called hardcore-wrestling is very thin in WWE - at best he would incorporate some of the talent and bookers behind WSX, they derserved it.

WSX Forever & ECW on SCI-FI Never!!!!!,
By
This review is from: Wrestling Society X: The Complete First Season (DVD)
Eventhough the show lasted 1 season, I still like it better then the crap the suits from up north put on SCI-FI's ECW. When WSX was on the air, I watched that show more times then I watch WWECW. I even recorded some of the episodes. WSX I hope you come back to teach WWECW a thing or two about what REAL hardcore wrestling is. I give this set a 10 out of 10.

It was going great until...,
This review is from: Wrestling Society X: The Complete First Season (DVD)
So I'm watching this match, it's going rather good, but there's a bit too much on the theatrics. And then...
One guy electrocutes the other and knocks him out. Right, so if you're a real wrestling fan like me, and you're not a mark (wrestling slang) you'll feel like MTV is ridiculing the sport entertainment you may or may not love. The talent they've acquired for WSX is amazing, even though some of the more famous mainstays like Sean Waltman (X-Pac), New Jack, etc only appeared on the first episode, and are clearly good wrestlers. But whoever booked this promotion is either an MTV exec looking to appeal to the "PONIES AND STICKERS AND MYSPACE DOT COM!" crowd of teens with perpetual ADHD, and constantly upping the ante on just what the wrestlers do in the ring, or is badly inexperienced, and has watched too much ROH and TNA and only wanting to include the high spots. Now coming to the core issues of why WSX was bad. The booking was the sort of stuff you'd expect from an MTV produced show, with shades of olde-time circus attractions, and "Jackass". The show was almost not about wrestling as much as just the high spots, "OOH LOOK AT THAT HE CAN BACKFLIP! OOH LOOK HE JUMPED OFF THAT BALCONY! OOH OMG LOOK AT THAT BIG FLYING KICK!" Mat wrestling, technical skills, even just hardcore brawling, all the sort of things you'd see in an average show of ECW (ECW, not ECW on SciFi) or ROH are eliminated in favor of excessive high flying and the most gaudy and outrageous stunts imaginable to a point where it all looks ridiculous. The height of the ridicule and outrageous activities include some quite tame "hardcore" things, which look ridiculously fake as well, such as one wrestler using big wires to electrocute another, a wrestler falling into a container full of C-4 explosives and getting blown up, and a bit pulled from TV with Vampiro throwing a fireball at some other guy's face. Exacerbate this with some of the worst acting of any pro wrestlers in the business, such as a hispanic wrestler who can't even pronounce "Cerveza" with a hispanic accent, instead going the route of "survaysuh". Pitiful.

I have been a pro wrestling fan for about 25 years now , with WSX, I experienced something that I hadnt in the last 7 years or so.... I actually looked forward to watching a weekly televised wrestling program .
When I first heard the rumblings of "a wrestling show on MTV" , I honestly wasnt expecting to be too impressed . Well, after viewing the first few episodes , I was hooked . The moves that some of these guys pull off are nothing short of amazing . If you are bored with the "action" of the current "big two" (WWE & TNA) ,this DVD set may be for you . I anxiously await this release .

Are you kidding me?,
This review is from: Wrestling Society X: The Complete First Season (DVD)
Okay, so I heard that MTV was going to put on a new wrestling show to compete with the new ECW. I thought, that's great since the new ECW is getting worse (still good, though), but then I watched this trash that they called "wrestling". I was embarrased for the wrestlers, the bands that performed, and even the fans.
One of the first things that kind of bothered me was the ring announcer, what was he running for? A ring announcer is supposed to excite the fans, but that was a little much and it would have been fine until the "explosion" and the camera shaking. Skip the theatrics and start wrestling. Next was the idea of bringing in popular bands to perform, uh why? This show is only a half hour (which is absolutely ridiculous, ECW started out crappy and it was given a full hour) so MTV needed to quit trying to promote music (what am I saying, they don't do that anyway) and get on with the show. Finally, the matches themselves. Once again, if the theatrics could have been toned down, the matches would have been so much better (I did enjoy the title match between Vampiro and X-Pac). So many say that this was great and that MTV did not give the show a chance. Are you kidding me? MTV gave the show all the chances in the world, even airing sneak previews to promote the show. WSX was a bad idea from the beginning, trying to recapture the spirt of the orginal ECW was just stupid. No matter how cheap this DVD set is or how great its executive producer thinks it is. True wrestling fans can see that this show is a waste of time and energy and I hope the wrestlers that were involved were happy to move on to much, much better things. |
