Forward by Russ Hellickson, Head Wrestling Coach, Ohio State UniversityI first met Ken Chertow as a high school student out of Huntington, West Virginia, when I tried to recruit him to wrestle for the University of Wisconsin in 1984.I was immediately impressed with the young man's competitive spirit and excellence of performance on the mat and in the classroom. As a coach, your success is tied to making scholarship commitments to the right young men who can and will return a commitment of their talent and work ethic to your program. Ken was an easy choice as he was clearly one of the right ones.Unfortunately for me, Ken chose to attend Penn State. Their gain - my loss!Ken had an illustrious academic and athletic career for the Nittany Lions, but fate smiled on me, when, following Ken's graduation in 1989, I was able to hire him as an Assistant Wrestling Coach for The Ohio State University.Over the next three years, I got to really know Ken and the personal qualities that make him a great teacher and coach. He has an enthusiasm for life and wrestling that is shared by very few. Don't even try to slow him down - ever! His intensity in training and in competition separate him from the crowd. The drive, the grit, the fight, were obvious in him every day. Ken is intensity personified.Ken understands the technical, physiological and psychological components of wrestling. The mind and body have to work together and Ken knows how to get it done. This book will allow you to share Ken's wrestling enthusiasm, intensity and expertise. It will help you understand wrestling and how to prepare for competition. But more importantly, the wealth of information included in this book can help make a difference in the way you live and think.Ken has moved on now, but he made a lasting impact on me and our Buckeye Wrestlers. Through this book, he can positively touch your life as well.
